Question What "Bad Things" have happened on the Island?

After a healthy 17+ year reign under Ben, things begin to go wrong once the torch is passed.

I wonder what exactly went wrong for Locke? What "bad things" happened?

Seemingly Widmore hasn't sent more mercenaries to the island, as he can't find it. So what could possibly have gone so wrong for Locke to end up 'dead' in a coffin?

What factors are still in play which could hinder Locke?

I think Ki made a good point in suggesting that Locke had to move the island again (himself this time), as seemingly he was unable to go back (hence him being in the real world in a coffin) - and as Ben said, whoever moves the island cannot return (makes you wonder what "ideas" ben has cooked up in that wonderful brain of his). Anyway, with that said, I can think of the following possibilities:
  • Miles, Charlotte and Faraday have done something to cause things to go wrong. In particular neither Charlotte or Miles seemed worried about "2nd protocol". I'm even thinking that Miles is VERY much in cahoots with the islands spirits..who seem to be telling him details..future plot points almost. He's just not worried at all, which is weird considering he was originally there for money.
  • Was their turmoil between Locke and his new Others? Alpert seems the fickle type (forgive me Richard but it's true), did he not like Locke's style of leadership, despite being "ever willing and ready to assist"?
  • Perhaps Jacob and Locke clashed somewhat? If Jacob is a past iteration of Locke, then perhaps this caused problems?
  • Did the island spirits take over? Attempting to reclaim the world of the living as their own, by manipulating time and space?
  • Another outside agency? Perhaps led by Abbadon (although i still believe he's Widmore's man)?
Just a few random ideas. What really puts the fly in the ointment however, is th fact that the spirits/island seem to be calling the losties back..

But here's the confusion..On the boat (4.08) Michael saw a manifestation of Libby telling him not to go through with the bomb..yet it was a fake..surely she would know this, seeing as the manifestations always seem to know future details? So why tell him not to do it, especially when if it was real, it would have protected the island by getting rid of Widmore's people? So perhaps there's a key distingtion between the island and the subconscious link to the dead? Is the island now in a battle with it's own island spirits?

Oh, and another thing, IF Locke did turn the wheel..then who is running things on "crahole island" now? Who's the NEW chosen one?

surely not Miles? ..well, he is special.

I was wondering what could have been going on on the island too...Jack said that 'Jeremy' had told him that bad things had happened on the island since he left, and that 'it was his fault'. So it is seemingly related to Jack somehow...hmm.
Good shout about John having to move the island also - would explain how/why he ended up back 'on land' as it were! Seems like a strong possibility.

Yeah, I think he meant Jack's fault because he left the island and ignored everyones pleas not to.

Also, i guess Locke has been on the island for just under 3 years, since Ben or Jack said that he came to see them about a month ago. Not sure what that means, but it might help time-line wise.
