This was the question Locke asked Kate after Jack had called him crazy after nearly being dragged down a hole by the smoke Monster in the season finale.
In the season 4 finale i'm left asking the same question - what DOES Jack think he saw? The island clearly moved/disappeared. He saw it as clear as day, yet he continued to contest that Locke moved the island as Locke said he would. I know Jack doesn't like to admit he's wrong - especially in the case of Locke, but even for Jack, this is either stupdity or the ultimate case of denial. I'm glad Hurley had the common sense to put him straight. Of course Jack does go on to lie as Locke suggests and 3 years later he collapses completely, but still, should it have taken all that time for him to concede?

I found the moest ironic thing about this was that Jack, despite knowing himself that he was wrong, was actually right lol. In actual fact Locke didn't move the Island - Ben did.
But as far as the question goes I can't see it going beyond Jack just not willing to admit he was wrong. He can't let himself believe in anything beyond science and so when confronted with such a thing as the Island going down the plug hole then he needs to deny himself. I don't doubt the possibility of Jack thinking something else, I just feel that it's Jack basic stubborness (as Juls commented a while ago) that prevents him from admitting the truth.

I know you would bring this up
![]() and tbh, I have to agree. Jack actually genuinely annoyed me this episode. He saw it move and denying it was quite possibly the stupidest thing he could have done.

I don't see how even Jack could be so ignorant as to deny this.
I have to agree with Rose in S1 - there's a fine line between denial and faith. ![]()

Why is he so afraid to believe? Like seriously..is this all to do with Sarah and how she built his faith up only the hurt him? Or is it to do with his dad? If so then Christian (Mr. high and mighty) has alot to answer for aswell imo. Quote:
The sad thing is, I think he's alot of faith..he just doesn't see it that way..he doesn't apply his stubborn belief in his own ability to get things done, laterally. Sometimes I feel sorry for him, like when he repeated "we're all still alive" (or whatever) after the chopper had crashed..it was like he was trying to reassure himself by holding onto the crumbs of his own mess.

This did make me laugh, i must say. Ahh...poor Jack
he was purely in denial, i think - like someone said, he's the type of person who is literally unable to believe that an island can just disappear. The only thing he can do is just deny that it ever happened.

Yeah when Jack wants to be in denial it's going to take pretty much a miracle for him to get out of it...
I can understand that Jack was in shock after all he'd been through, but to so stubbornly and arrogantly tell Hurley that no, the Island had not been moved after all, borded on patronizing him...Is is really so hard for Jack to admit that he was wrong or, even, that he doesn't know and is not so perfect and always right? Well yes it is very hard for him to do which is, one could argue, quite cowardly to an extent, and Jack just needs to realise that after everything they've been through since they crashed cannot be explained in a way that he feels comfortable with. He just acts horribly immature so much of the time, and it's very annoying!
