Default Why Jeremy Bentham?

Why do you think they all called Locke Jeremy Bentham? Locke could have introduced himself als Jermey but still they would have called him Locke. The weird thing of all this is they talk about Jeremy Bentham like they have never met Locke before. It's was a bit freaky don't you think? Or was this name only for the shocking?

He seems to have swapped philosophers - it'll be interesting to compare Locke's and Bentham's respective philosophies and see if it indicates a change in (our) Locke's character.

Yes, i found it strange how the O6 were referring to 'Jeremy' as if he's this mysterious, all-powerful human being, when it's just plain old Locke. Very strange indeed. It makes me wonder what on earth Locke gets up to for the 2-3 years or so after the crash.

Lol when i got in earlier my flatmate (who had just finished watching the episode) came running at me going "Omg i studied Jeremy Bentham in Criminology!!" lol...so she was telling me about the real Jeremy Bentham, and in turn i told her about the real John Locke from my psychology classes. It was very interesting! All i remember about this Bentham guy is that he had something to do with punishment...lol...This might help.

might as well post some extract:

Quote:
Jeremy Bentham (IPA: ['benθəm] or ['bentəm]) (15 February 17486 June 1832) was an English jurist, philosopher, and legal and social reformer. He was a political radical, and a leading theorist in Anglo-American philosophy of law. He is best known for his advocacy of utilitarianism, for the concept of animal rights,[1][2] and his opposition to the idea of natural rights, with his oft-quoted statement that the idea of such rights is "nonsense upon stilts."[3] He also influenced the development of welfarism.[4]
He became known as one of the most influential of the utilitarians, through his own work and that of his students. These included his secretary and collaborator on the utilitarian school of philosophy, James Mill; James Mill's son John Stuart Mill; and several political leaders including Robert Owen, who later became a founder of socialism. He is also considered the godfather of University College London.
Bentham's position included arguments in favour of individual and economic freedom, the separation of church and state, freedom of expression, equal rights for women, the end of slavery, the abolition of physical punishment (including that of children), the right to divorce, free trade, usury,[5] and the decriminalization of homosexuality.[6][7]

This is certainly one of the most interesting aspects of the episode for me - upon watching the episode again, I notice that only Hugo seems indifferent to referring to him as Jeremy Bentham - he asks Hurley why he doesn't just call him by his normal name - which could suggest that doing so would either compromise Locke/Island or compromise them..

It's almost as if the island or the manifestations/spirits are observing everything that goes on and so they have to use code-name in order to refer to Locke.

Or perhaps this is literally a different iteration (incarnation/loop) of 'Locke' - an angle strengthened by 'Cabin Fever'.

Just some suggestions - it will be interesting to find out what went down on "craphole" after Jack left - apparently some REALLY bad stuff happened.

Also, it's perhaps worth noting that Locke/Bentham first came to see Jack and Kate a month before his 'funeral' (according to Jack..who was stoned). Could help shed some light on time-line etc.
