Default "Bad Mojo" - The Curse of the Six

Found this interesting - one of the coast guards who transports the Oceanic 6 'home' rubs a 'mojo bag' and says that the cargo (Oceanic 6) represent "bad mojo".

Mojo means 'soul' or 'life force', and mojo bags are typically carried for their ability to ward off supernatural or evil powers (etc).

I find this interesting not only because the writers are basically suggesting that the Oceanic 6 are seen by some as being 'cursed' or representing 'evil' - hey they've were confirmed dead, so no wonder some people are put off by their sudden reappearance.

But also, the contents of the mojo bag instantly reminded me of the ash which was around Jacob's hut:

I'm wondering whether this has any significance, and if whether the ash around Jacob's hut is indeed there to not only contain him, but to contain him because he brings 'bad luck' (or other negative conotations). This could make sense in that it was Hurley (he of the 'bad luck' complex') who enabled him to jump the line and become 'free' (so to speak)..

Hmmm... Here I thought it was a rabbits foot, but upon looking at the photo it does appear to have a string hanging from it as if it is a bag. How did you know what a mojo bag is?

It was interesting that the pilot said this. Almost as if he knew something about the actual circumstances involved. I couldnt imagine why transporting 6 survivors of a crash who were suppose to be dead could be considered back luck or bad mojo at all. It would be more of a miracle I think. Unless of course the pilots know the truth.

It could also be a rabbits foot..

I'd like to be able to say I knew what a mojo bag was, but I looked it up on Wikipedia instead I wanted to ensure I had the correct understanding for 'mojo' - and I came across reference of 'mojo bag'.

Yeah, why was he so spooked? Ah, unless it's because they were supposed to be confirmed dead (as you said) - Now that I think about it, i can understand why that would cause a lot of trepedation - especially for a superstitious person, which the pilot clearly was. I also think that pilots see alot of weird and unexplained phenomena on their travels and so perhaps escorting 6 'dead people' back home was just too 'spooky' for him? ..especially since their last plane crashed

I guess you're right. A superstitious person would probably be rather put off by having to fly 6 people who were in a plane crash and rubbing a rabbits foot does confirm he was superstitious. I am thinking that it is for certain a rabbits foot. It would tie in better with the show itself, you know?

Im not superstitious at all, so thats probably why I think he might know more. I am one of those people who believe that you make your own luck. No such thing as bad luck as far as I am concerned.

I guess it shows how 'aware' the outside world are of them - and slightly helps explain their 'fame' which has been re-highlighted in certain episodes (Kate's courtroom, Jack at the chemist). It's also interesting because many, I believe, would consider someone like Hurley to be VERY supertituous - however his supertition was created by the island..or the numbers (one in the same thing, perhaps). So i guess they're also suggesting that some people's supertition is very real..or rather the reason for their supertitious behaviour is very understandable. The outside world (at various points) view Hugo as crazy..yet we know he's not. I just find it interesting how the creators use certain devices to tell a story or to highlight certain aspects of their thinking.

Good point - we've had quite a few 'rabbit' reference throught Lost haven't we - Jack's first episode, Mile's rabbit foot key ring, Alex gutting the rabbit, Ben's numerous rabbit associations.

Interesting - I believe in luck but I am certainly someone who also believes in fate. Some things, in my view, cannot be changed..but I also believe that in between the 'stepping stones' of 'fate', we can make our own luck. Although my usage of the word luck can be used interchangeably with the word 'destiny'.

I guess I believe in many things, like our friend Locke.

As for bad luck, I do believe there is such a thing - although i don't necessarily invest my beleif in it. I have issues with Karma (often believed to be an opponent of 'luck')..whilst I subscribe to the notion, I don't believe that it is directly related to the individual..rather the sum of all individuals.

Bit of a tangent there, but it's an interesting thing you raised.
