Good to see mad old Horace again, but man that dream was one of the trippyest that Locke has ever had. I thought his Boone and Yemi dreams were 'out there' but this, this was craaaaz-e!
However, it shared parallels with his other island dreams, in that he sees something or someone that he hadn't seen before - this time it was Horace (previously it was the beachcraft 1.19 and Yemi 2.21). I think this signals a distinction between the other 'visions' that people experience on the island - dreams have the ability to plant the subconscious with things/people that that person hasn't knowingly experienced before. Anyway, I found it interesting that the island/Jacob chose Horace as a guide - obvious this wasn't actually 'Horace' - merely his 'image'. I guess it goes back to the 'chess piece' scenario, in that Jacob can only use certain 'pieces' to guide his 'chosen ones'..it's almost as if he only has certain tools at his disposal and he has to make 'best use' of them in order to effect his will (i.e. guide Locke). and since Horace had the map to the cabin, it made sense to use a dream involving Horace to guide Locke to his actual body where the map was. Interestingly, this dream also told us that Horace was the one responsible for building Jacob's cabin - does this suggest that Horace/Dharma and Jacob were indeed in cahoots at one point? I've long considered them to be on 'opposite sides of the fence', so to speak. And perhaps they were - perhaps Horace/Dharma built the cabin specifically to contain Jacob - maybe they built it on top of a specific island property..and perhaps they were the ones who came up with the 'ash' containment? ![]() What also interested me about the dream, is that it appeared to be on a 'loop' - Horace acted like a computer programme (goes all Matrixy ) in that he had no consciousness (well, he was only a dream) and repeated his words..not only that, the trees also reapeared. I think this tells us that Jacob/The Island only has a limited range in terms of their usage of dream implementation (or perhaps it varies from person to person)? Perhaps the 'looping' in the dream, also alludes to the idea of 'time-loops' on the island?Anyway, those are just some of my thoughts.

I've been thinking some more about this, and i think the 'looping' of Horace in he dream definetely signifies that Jacob/the island only has limited usage of 'dream effectors' - the same could be seen when Locke delved into his subconscious and was presented with a dream in which Boone guided him for that dream (3.03). 'Boone' (or Jacob's impersonation of 'Boone'?) only had a limited time to effect Locke..this is illustrated by the 'cleaned-up' version of Boone which Locke first sees, and the bloodied and deathly vesion of Boone which Locke last saw when he was fatally wounded in the beachcraft plane:
![]() .. this deathly version of Boone gives Locke the final piece of the message - to save Eko, which in turn was another piece in the islands planning of Locke's journey - "lift your up your eyes and look north" etc. So it would appear that the ability to guide Locke (and others) via dreams is limited..at's almost as if Jacob(or the island) can only use the 'impression' of a dream for so long, before that dream either has to re-loop, or end - "Wake up, John!": ![]()

It's almost as if the Boone in that last picture was the 'real' Boone (as Locke last remembered him) and the cleaned-up version was the island painting an 'impression' of Boone.
The island/Jacob is very chess-like in it's usage of the pieces available to it ![]()

I also found it interesting how deliberately Horace told Locke: "GODSPEED, JOHN"..especially considering Horace's last name is 'GOODSPEED'..
![]() Godspeed being a wish for good fortune and a prosperous journey. This is effectively the island (or Jacob, lol) wishing Locke good-luck (in finding his purpose)..which of course Locke believes in: Claire: "Do you believe in luck?" Locke: "I believe in many things"

I watched this again the other day and he said that he was building it for him and the missus..so i'm guessing it had nothing to do with Jacob at the time. Which is good for me as it helps reconcile how a Dharmarite (other than Ben) would be so closely aligned with Jacob as to be building a cabin for him - i.e the cabin wasn't intended for Jacob.
As for why Horace - a mathematician - was building the cabin, well i guess the Dharma folks had many 'hidden' abilities. Who knows, he might have intended it to be a 'secret' place for him and his wife..somewhere only they knew about - to get away from the "D.I." every now and then, or something?
