So Ben doesn't know everything

The biggest point i got from the Alex scene is that:

Ben didn't see that 1 coming / didn't expect it. He looked genuinely shocked.
Which means he of course didn't 'forsee' it.

Which must mean it is Jacob he knows all. This is now why they are off to see him.

What i also got from the scene where Ben tells John he wants to say goodbye to Alex is:
This was not an evil guy. He is a normal person, with a WEAKNESS (although this is now gone nothings holding him back). His little bit with John seemed very 'man to man'.
Shame, for once, Ben couldn't talk himself out of a situation. But these people are obviously not willing to negotiate.

Indeed, Ben inferred that Widmore changed the rules - he did something that Ben didn't expect him to do. In essense, Widmore 'cheated'. Ben knew the boundaries of what was 'allowed' (or agreed) to happen, but Widmore stepped outside of those boundaries...or Keamy did, depending on whether or not Martin was operating on his own autonomy, or if killing Alex was always one of his instructions.

This is something I've been trying to highlight for a while now - Ben is a guy with a heart, and as you say, weakness is what makes people human, and it really brought me even closer to Ben - his grief over Alex was like seeing doves cry

As you say, Keamy wasn't prepared to negotiate and unfortunately for Ben and Alex fans, Ben just wasn't quite resourceful enough on that occasion

Ben really thought that Keamy wouldnt do it so it was good to see that when he did do it that Ben Has a heart after all these crazy things he has done.

Though thats probably the only time he'll get ne fing wrong
