You're assuming that it went to the others at all, or that they know what the pearl is....

I'd say that that's a very dangerous assumption, given that there has never been any sign of them.

Also - The cigarettes, they must mean something..looks to me like there was only one person in there, maybe it was desmonds partner watching him?

If not one of them, then maybe another unoccupied hatch. But its gotta be a hatch, unless the Pearl is a complete fake.
