Now that scene interested me especially how it was a 'summer camp' for Mittelos Laboratories.
So [teen] Locke's teacher wanted him to be interested in Science, it's weird to think that he could of been a man of science and working for Alpert. JOHN: I'm not a scientist! I like boxing and fishing and cars. I like sports! GELLERT: I'm gonna tell you something--something I wish someone had told me at your age. You might not want to be that guy in the labs surrounded by test tubes and beakers, but that's who you are, John. You can't be the prom king. You can't be the quarterback. You can't be a superhero. JOHN: Don't tell me what I can't do. Why was 'Gellert' so interested in getting John to be a scientist? Had he spoken to Alpert or was it a coincidence or John's destiny that he changed? |

I noticed this point. I like to think that the reason he so opposes Jack on the island is because Jack is a man of science, John has remade himself as a man of faith, and possibly blames this for the way his life turned out. He rejects science on the island because he used to be a man of science and it wrecked his life, or was this because he was fighting his destiny?
I'm not sure about Gellert, but I'd like to think he's working with Richard. Then again, maybe he's just an overconcerned teacher.

Locke never wanted to be a scientist though did he? He disagrees with Jack and science so much because going anywhere near anything to do with science has got him beaten up and such.

That's what I mean. I don't think I worded myself very well. I was trying to saY that Locke seemed to be destined to be a man of science and that's why he despised it.
If that makes any more sense

Good point about the hospital. Maybe he blames the hospital for not fully reviving his ability to walk, via science, whereas on the island he was healed, via faith.

I think everyone has Science AND Faith within them quite frankly, however on the subject of the teacher it is possible he worked for Mittelos. Though we could argue that anyone involved in the Survivors' lives work for Mittelos and/or the Others.

His teacher just seemed like he was lying
JOHN: How do they even know about me? GELLERT: Well, they must have sent a rep to the science fair--your display at Costa Mesa. That's unlikely and seeing as Alpert said John wasnt ready yet it just gives the feeling he's been waiting and his teacher doesnt feel he should tell him how Alpert knew aout him. |

It does not necessarily mean the teacher is in on it per say, I would imagine Alpert met with the teacher however. Though that sentence does make it seem as though he was lying.

Well no but it's just unlikely. I mean Richard Alpert sending himself or somebody to a science fair when he already knows John is special it's just a tad unlikely.
I agree it made me laugh. |

If John can remember Alpert's visit to him as a young boy then perhaps he has the right to act suspicious of what the teacher had to say, otherwise John was chosen purely based on his work at the science fair.
Perhaps from John's point of view, this Mittelos company randonly seeks to recruit young people with a background in Science to their school.
