The subliminal hints in this episode were most interesting - John Locke's first knowledge of the world was from inside a box (incubator)

..trapped, contained but never giving up - "a mircale baby" and a "fighter" was what the nurses called him.

More hints at him being "special".."predestined".."chosen".

But the backdrop to his life wasn't so fantastical - from the incubator he went on to be trapped inside of locker's -

yet another box. Shunned by his peers for his 'specialness' he appeared to deny his own calling. Much like Jack's 'Achera' story, Locke didn't want to accept who he was..he fought against it and tried to do what he thought would gain him acceptance. Choosing the knife appeared to be another hint at this. Alpert's face said it all - the kid wasn't ready then..and he wasn't ready when Alpert came calling years later.

From the locker we know that Locke went from being side boxes, to working for a box company. Progression i guess, but even then he was shunned and bullied by his boss.

Locke had to get away from boxes altogether..he took it literally when he fell 8 stories only to survive..a miracle. Was he ready yet?

Abbadon seemed to think he was almost ready, but that he needed a "Walkabout" to unlocke his true potential. Locke was still in denial, but something Abbadon said stuck with Locke..

Who eventually got to go on the walkabout, and quickly proceeded to yet another box - the swan hatch.

Somethings never change, but this was a step in the right direction..Locke's path had led him to the right place at last..it may have taken longer than Alpert and Jacob wanted, but good things are worth waiting for..and the torch has seemingly been passed..

just as it was predestined..

But what does this all mean? What is the purpose of Locke spending his whole life in boxes? I guess its to do with him always being trapped or something...

Is it a hint to the island perhaps? The magic box which has now set him free, and he's now trying so hard to protect?
