I think we ALL assume the Oceanic Six are going to return to the Island in the future, though how will Hurley accomplish this? I suppose everyone can have a sudden turn around in health.
What will it take for Hurley to regain his health? Hurley voluntarily went back to Santa Rosa after seeing Charlie at the Convenience Store so surely his visits from Charlie SHOULD help should they not? Or is Charlie purely screwing his mind up more - if indeed it IS Charlie. If I were Hurley I would accept that it REALLY is Charlie and then 'somehow' manage to prove I am sane, perhaps with his help? Easier said than done, but it would have been accomplishable had Hurley's mental health not worsened as we saw in 4x10. What made Hurley go downhill? Can he not accept that Charlie is really there? - I wonder what they have been talking about on the garden bench?

Interesting.
I think that the issue of mental health is one which underpins the nature of Lost..the island and the visions. As I mentioned a few weeks back, the things theyve experience on the island would be enough to either send them to theloony bbin or have them sent to the loony bin..in the real world. And so it goes..Hurley sits up all night talking to "Charlie". Charlie or the smoke monster.. ![]() I guess it doesn't matter..he's dead..yet he's also here.. I think that going back the island could be the thing that saves Hurley from a life of madness. He seems able to cope, perhaps his threshold to 'crazyness' is higher than Jack's, due to his past experience (Dave etc)? But even so, he too seems on the edge. Perhaps the only way for him/them to return to the island and 'get better', is to collectively will it to happen? Jack's already tried 'hoping' that the plane would crash over the Pacific..perhaps he needs more of the 6 to collectively want to return in order for it to 'happen'? Afterall, he seemed near certain in his nature that Kate's membership to the 'Island Return' club would be the thing which would allow them to go back: "We've gotta go back, kate..Weve gotta go back!!" (3.23) Is Kate the key to the island 'letting' them return? Are all of them needed like a team of Thundercats banding together? If so why doesn't the island just 'make' them go back..heck, why all the visions..just grab Jack's butt and drag him back.. Ah..because it can't..the island can manipulate freewill, but it cannot overide it...? As for Hurley and "Charlie", I think it's guilt - Hugo was always the guilty type - he blamed himself for the plane crash, he even blamed himself for the deaths of those around him. The island helped him to regain his confidence and perspective - I think that post island he is guilty for being alive..yet he also doesn't seem to believe that he's alive - a self-petuating guilt with no foundation in reality. Hurley as gone off the reservation, yet he enjoy's his 'chats' with "Charlie". Perhaps it's because "Charlie" is the only one who visits him on a regular basis? Perhaps it's because "Charlie" is the only on who truely understands him? But even "Charlie" wants somethiing..even "Charlie" has an agenda.. Whether Charlie is Hugo's subconcious guilt, the spirit of the Rock God, or the island doing Island things... ...Poor Hugo..is really is screwed. ![]()

I'll reply later when I have something smart to add.
Btw Roco, what's the Rock God?

Hurley's situation is quite odd because seeing Dave did not send him "over the edge" as it were, however we have Libby to thank for that. So it is hard to judge. Good idea regarding a collective 'want' to return. Though one has to wonder why the Island itself has not MADE it happen, or perhaps it is doing so as we speak in the Flashforwards. I think things are much harder than we could ever comprehend; even for an Island that seemingly/potentially can control Fate. Almost like there are two opposing forces. Take Locke for example - why has he not found his Destiny yet if it were that easy? I think you hit the nail on the head, it cannot control freewill. Interesting ideas regarding his guilt. I am not sure how to add to that as it is quite tricky/confusing to even begin to comment on. I felt REALLY sorry for Hugo in this episode and guilt could very well be relevant here -perhaps why was he crying for instance? It will be interesting to see how this develops. I would rule out it being Hugo's 'subconscious' personally, but in conclusion Hugo will come out of this - he HAS to.
