I agree Keamy is a great character for the reasons you both mentioned.

I think that Ben only set Smokey on "stun"..hence the survival of Keamster and his men. Or perhaps Smokey is unable to 'kill' in a fist enounter - his initial interaction with Locke, Mr. Eko and Kate would support this.

Perhaps if Smokey's path crosses once again with Keam, Smokey will be ready to 'execute'. Here's hoping

As for the amount of men in Keamy's team - I counted 6/7..I think everyone survived, although on poor chap got his leg/face all mangled:

Interesting idea, though it does not make sense given Ben's state of mind at the time. But perhaps "first encounters" are limited in terms of what it can do. It could have been taking pictures of their minds as we have seen before, ready for future judgement.

I could not really make out his injuries in the episode or even in those pictures - I think some gruesome injuries would have fit in well into this episode.

What bothers me more is why did Frank running from Keamy in the jungle when he was looking for him? OK he was searching for him, but why was he running in a same direction Keamy was on? Why? I'll tell you. Cos Sawyer, Claire and Miles had to be warned somehow so they used this kinda stupid scene. Bad, very bad.

Keamy had to survive cos he is the characters that appears in later episodes. I don't like that! Cerberus doesn't let anyone alive to pass him, especially not some primitive soldiers. Disappointing!

I think Frank was trying to find his way back to the Chopper and to create a path for the injured Mercenaries as the quicker he ran ahead, the quicker Keamy's men could get further away from the Black Smoke. After an encounter like that, you would want to KEEP on running - even for hours just to be safe. Just a theory however.

Well there were MANY ways that scene could have been shot, for example Sawyer hearing Keamy approaching or Miles sensing it perhaps? I agree that some scenes involve oh so convenient events as a "get-out clause" for the writers but this was not necessarily one of them. I think it was a great little scene because they narrowly avoided being killed - it was intense.

True but he is just so loveable. Only joking. Yes he is a very bad individual indeed, but he is a great character and a great Villain. He really made Lost MUCH better in my opinion. As for how they survived, that is beyond me. It seems for whatever reason, Ben did not order the Black Smoke to KILL Keamy and his men - but rather injure them.

I liked Keamy early in S4 because I thought he was a nice person [aboard the Freighter] but I still liked him when he was the bad guy.
