VERY interesting. I am really loving the links to Eygpt and Tunisia.
This scene was very parculiar and intriguing - yet they only teased us. So I take it the Black Smoke derives from Eygpt and/or the Underworld. The top of the wall reminds me of the Statue of Liberty's head - completely irrelevant yes.

I'm also wondering whether smokey has any 'alien' roots? There are some people who believe that Ancient Egypt - one of the most advanced civilisations for their time, was also one of the main locations of alien visitation. Some also believe they assisted in the building of the Pyramids - one of the wonders of the world. An outlandish suggestion, however if true..and if alien life did once reside in Egypt..perhaps they were the original bringers of Smokey to 'this' world..to Egypt, from where it 'magic-boxed' to the island (pre-Dharma). I don't necessarily believe that Smokey is an 'alien life-form', but it could make sense on some levels.

Ahh yes, I watched a documentary on that. The Aliens taught the Egyptians many skills - the most shocking example being the Pyramids lining up to the Star Concellations perfectly. Something that would need powerful technology to accomplish - not to mention as you say the building of the Pyraminds themselves. The explanation that they wee created through years of manpower is not a sufficient arguement in my opinion. Great documentary actually. Makes you wonder whether the infamous 'curses' we hear so much about were also derived from the Aliens. It really would be amazing if the Black Smoke were of Alien descent. An amazing thought and not too fairytale-like by any means.

The most intriguing theme for me - how old exactly is Island?
We see all the sign showing us that Island is very very old. Glyphs are the best example. If Island can move, maybe it picked up some ancient people who built their civilization on it. That would explain glyphs and monuments like temple and leg of that statue, who could have been some God for them. Everything is possible. They met the Smoke and bowed to him, building him a temple in the ground symbolizing the Underworld - some supernatural entity in a form of a black smoke that can do all great and terrible things as well. They feared him and build him a temple underground. Who knows, maybe they had a village of their own and in later purge, Dharma built barracks over their houses, but still left some of the old "heritage". Also in the secret room with that wheel there are symbols forming a circle... Everyone says that Smoke is kinda organism, but in one way I disagree. On the blast door map says "malfunction of Cerberus system". Word malfunction is used only for machines and systems NOT for organisms. Plus, sonic fence can prevent Cerberus from entering the barracks. And there are those so called Cerberus vents (CV), which I think are those holes in the ground that Smoke uses for quick moving. Those are all adjectives for some mechanical construction. But than again, glyphs on the door for the room in which is the control for Cerberus? That means he predates Dharma but was later control by them. I think Cerberus was not dangerous at the beggining but after the inncident he became hostile to all, even Dharma. Wondering how natives aka Others protected themsleves from it... Or maybe Smoke wasn't hostile to them at all! Quite a mystery, I say! ![]()

You know, I'm probably going to sound like an idiot, but why does everyone call Smokie Cerberus? No one's ever used that term in the show, and 'Malfuction of the Cerberus System' could mean anything. It could even mean the coffee machine stopped working or something, because I reckon down the hatch that would be a pretty big deal

-- Cerberus was the 3-headed dog that guarded the gates of Hell and so people draw comparisons to that and the Black Smoke because it appears evil and unworldly I suppose. Rousseau called it a "Security System", while the Blast Door Map called mentions a "Cerberus System" which could be evidence - but you are completely right in saying they might not be the same. Lord knows coffee is important but abandoning a Station because the Coffee Vending machine malfnctioned? Well never say never FBF. Just joking. ![]()

I love the whole idea of the island originally being inhabited by an ancient civilization. If the characters each have their own backstory it only makes sense that the island does too. I love that it ties into the whole Egyptian idea with the glyphs.
As for aliens and Egyptians, I have always felt that Egyptian people almost look alienish. They must have had some sort of higher intellectuals helping them with their architecture. As Reed stated, they did not have the technology to build those pyramids and have them be perfectly aligned the way they are. I would be ok with aliens being the explanation for some of Losts mysteries, just not all of them. I like to think there is more of a spiritual or biblical explanation to a lot of Losts mysteries. ![]()
