The transformation of James Sawyer Ford

Back in series 1 we saw this man, very independant who didn't care about anybody but himself. His only aim in life was to find the man who killed his parents.

As the series have gone by we've found him caring for Kate, maybe even loving her. But tonight, seeing Sawyer care so much for Claire and Hurley just made me see how much this man has changed in the space of 4 months.
"If you touch one hair on his curly head I'll kill you"

He's done what he had to do, he killed the man who killed his parents. And maybe, just maybe, James is beginning to live his life the way it was supposed to be.

Well maybe the Lost writers will come to their senses and decide to be a little less predictable on this one.

Plus, Danielle's arc hadn't exactly ended (we still pretty much knew nothing about her) and she was killed.

Sawyer certainly has come a long way since he first crashed and his performance in the shape of things to come more than makes up for his lack of performance in the previous episodes for season 4

and maybe his new found caring sharing emotions will elevate his charater to being much more in the foreground than he has been in the past rather than sending him to his death

Stop talking about Danielle in Sawyer's thread

He's back! Sawyer was just wonderful last night. He was such a hero and I think it's such a change, but not one we haven't seen before. But I think he was two types of hero during the episode and that's important.

Initially he went after Karl, Alex and Danielle, and once he was told they were gone he went straight for Claire. He was shot at and yet he didn't stop. He warned those poor redshirts that nicely drew the bullets away from him, but yet they died. Although when the blood splattered on him I thought he'd been shot for a second and I nearly died of a heart-attack . Anyways, the look on his face when he thought Claire might be dead and the tender way he scooped her into his arms was beautiful. I thought Sawyer's protection of Claire and the baby was kinda a given. He's always sort of...liked Claire, and she's the only girl in their group and very small and fragile and has a baby - so like I said, given.

Still, wonderfully beautiful though. Especially when midway through his arguement he stopped to check Claire was ok, that was sweet.

My favourite scene, however, was when Sawyer took charge just after Smokey's awesomeness. When he demanded that Claire, Aaron and Hurley went back to the beach with him. I liked how Miles also wanted to come and Sawyer simply handed him the torch - it was kinda like he accepted him into the group. More importantly, Sawyer's protection of Hurley. Hurley, imo, could probably take care of himself but Sawyer wouldn't let him be alone. Sawyer stared down a barell of a gun in order to protect Hurley and he threatened Locke and it was just so wonderful. I think we're getting a suggestion that Sawyer would do anything to protect his friends. It was lovely.

And no, I don't think he's fully turned around. He's still very gun friendly and likes to threaten and still very angry, but I really loved how he was gruff, angry Sawyer but protective and sweet at the same time. Hence why I don't think he's going to die. He hasn't fully redeemed himself, he's just realised that he can be a hero.

I'll stop talking now, lol.

I don't think he's fully turned around, but it's a start, and he's beginning to see that people like him for who he can be.

Lord, I rambled on a bit didn't I?

And yes, it's a start. A very big start in my opinion. I'm still gushing about him today. I feel someone needs to make a video - when he's running across to Claire's house, slow-motion with that song, you know, "I need a hero, I'm holding out for a hero....."

First of all, I do think that Sawyers heroism was great and all, and well done to him.

But, lets not make a saint out of a sinner. We must remember that this good deed does not in anyway vanquish the bad that he has done in his past life - he still has a long way to go to balance that out (and it might already be too late). And let us not forget, that it wasn't long ago that he simply said he was doing this for himself - to surivive. And executing Tom in cold blood for petes sake was not on.

So lets be cautious in our congratulations, and lets hold back on the ticker tape parade here because this could quite easily be a one off. He could yet revert back to type - the vicous vengeful and just plan bad Sawyer that kills people and only looks after himself.

Yes it was a good start. And yes this could be Saywer becomming the man he has the potential to be. But lets not call it a transformation just yet. Lets wait for further actions before deciding that shall we?

Off the top of my head, I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong but "nice" Sawyer always seems to be around when Jack isn't. I don't know if this is relevant or not, as I always seemed to think that Locke was Jack's opposite/enemy.
