It is a shame they cannot share the Island and live in harmony. I think it is testament to the parallel goals they have for the Island.

I take it Ben NEEDS Widmore to stay alive for whatever reason. There are so many possibilities here. I think both are necessary for future events or something of a "higher importance" for Mankind - something along those lines.
