Default Possibly Interesting Parallel Between Ben and the Island

Was thinking about the episode "the Other Woman", where Ben told Jules "You're Mine!!". Very possessive of him..

However, with the fact that the island is keeping Michael (and probably the rest of the Oceanic 6) from being able to execute freewill and kill themselves, it makes me want to draw parallels between Ben, the Island and the notion of 'possession'.

I think possession is actually a very prominent, yet descreet, aspect of this show - we have people who are lost in their lives being 'imprisoned' on a mysterious island - an island which they didn't choose to be on (or did they..meh, that's another thread), then we have those same people wanting so much to get back, but instead they are now imprisoned on the other side of the looking glass. Whilst others simply want to exist on neither sid of the glass and wish to end their misery, except the island wont let them..

In other words, the island can control, their fates and manipulate their destiny. This can either be through coersion (visions and what have you..think Locke) or through mystical interventions (think car crash prevetning Jack from jumping off the bridge and Michael not being able to kill himself).

I think this level of control requires future knowledge..the island has to know what an individual is going to do before they do it, otherwise how would the island be able to rejig paths and happenings to prevent people from doing what they're not "supposed to do"? Take the car crash which prevented Jack from commiting suicide for example - this intervention involved real people - third parties..not manifestations or entities with no recollection of involvement. These people - the owman and child - must have had their paths 'rejigged' in order for their fate to collide with Jack's attempt at freewill (suicide)..

This level of pre-meditation suggests to me that the island is either the creators of fate or it has access to future events and can even course-correct. In other words this would effectively make the island..the Universe, as it is doing exactly what Mrs Hawkin said the Universe does - course correct.

I realise that this is detoured slightly from being a Ben/Island parallel into an Island/Universe parallel, but i'd like to address that with the comparison between Ben's possession of Jules and his possible possession of Jacob. The ash which circled his cabin must surely have been the substance that entrapped him..that possessed him (until Hugo set him free, of course)

In other words, Jacob may be Ben's leader, but Jacob is also Ben's possession. I'm working under the premise that Jacob is in part a representation of Ben's subconscious will, and in turn the Jacob is the representation of the islands 'human form'. That's not to say that Jacob wasn't once a regular human being who dabbled too much in island mystoholgy before becoming entrapped. But i'm thinking that we have divisions of Fate, or should I say, the controllers of fate: the Universe, the island, Jacob, Ben..

It's unlikely that all of these entities are one in the same thing (although they are all connected imo), but I wonder whether they all have the same objectives?

Humans operate under the notion that there is one grand controller - be it God (or a specific God), evolution, luck, freewill, whatever - but what happens when there are multiple forces each with their own ability to control futures? What if they are not working in harmony? what then?
