I don't know why everyone seems to trust Ben and believe everything he says....the man is a compulsive liar! Every time you think he is telling the truth about something it turns out he is lying. First John, now Michael... Don't get me wrong, i think Ben is a fabulous character, but i don't know why people can't see him for what he is by now!
Which brings me on to the fake plane wreckage. Ben or Widmore? I definately think it's Ben. After watching this episode i was under the impression that what Tom told Michael was a lie, and that basically the others needed some mug who would do what they said, and they chose Michael. The people on the freighter are after Ben, right? And Ben knows that. So he wants the freighties dead so they don't get to the island. SO the obvious answer from his point of view is to get someone (ie. Michael) to kill them all. To me it seems logical that Tom/Ben are lying. In which case, i think that Ben faked the wreckage. He doesn't want anyone to find the island because he knows there are people after him. Why would Widmore stage the crash? Sure he could easily manage it, and ok maybe he wants to divert people's attention from the island, but still, i think Ben has a stronger motive...opinions?

Ben is quickly becomming my favourite character in Lost and I do realy believe that he is only doing what is right for island (and himself)

I still think it was Widmore. Ok so the evidence could be a hoax [aswell] and Ben has stronger reasons for people not to find the island but Ben knows people can't see the island, they'd have to know where to look etc... [end of s2, hence Widmore finding it] 'God doesn't know how long we've been here, John. He can't see this island any better than the rest of the world can.' How would Ben fake it though? Yeah he has 'outside men' but seriously I don't think any of the others are willing to go that far for Ben, they don't like him that much.
Whereas Widmore has the money, the evilness. He doesnt want people to find that island either.
As much as I think Ben is willing to do anything to stop people finding the island I just dont see it being him.

Evidence has shown that Ben is extremely powerful and has a lot of money. Remember Miles? "Don't pretend that i don't know who you are or what you can do". I think Ben is a very powerful man. With enough money you can do most things. He will have connections off the island aswell, it wont be just the others working for him.
I do think that Ben would do anything to 'protect' the island.

I agree but that's true for Widmore. Widmore's off the island, therefore will probably have more connections and money to be honest.

The only people we've heard say that it is Widmore is Ben himself, Tom - one of Ben's closest associates (sp?), and Miles - a man who has just made a deal worth $3.2 mil with Ben to keep quiet about him.

Given that the only form of innocence for Widmore is his own freighter who are hardly likely to know the definite truth.

I know that doesn't help at all, but I'm still with Ben.

I can see the evidence for Ben is alot stronger and the more I think about it the more it's likely to be Ben who planted the plane wreckage but I'm still with Widmore
