For some reason i think i kind of assumed that Tom was gay...yet i can't quite think why. lol. I'm pretty sure i didn't read a spoiler. Maybe this line gave it away? I think i remember wondering at that point whether he was gay. So yeah, i wasn't surprised at all tbh!
