I said and thought a while ago that Ben's inside man MUST be someone of rank/importance on the boat.
Yes ok, Michael cud of got a list of frieghties (I am loosinng track of all the god damn lists on this show) together. Ben cud of then researched these peeps on list. But thats very time consuming, and surely wudn't give him everything he knew.
I stand by my opinion that it is in Fact the captain who is the/one of Ben's inside man.
Only a captain who is basicily employing peeps (Wud know their crudentials) on his boat wud know sooo much.

I think in terms of war, Michael wud be Bens probing attack and also the decption.

Btw, Ben hasn't said he only has 1 man on the boat. And we know with Ben his plan that we see, is not his main plan.

I'm not sure how much value to place in his 'knowing' expression, because it was a classic 'on hiatus for 4 months' scene (due to writers strike), so I think they really wanted to leave us with something to debate.

At the time of watching it I thought he knew that Mike was Ben's spy..thinking about it, they could go the other way and have him disbelief Sayid or something.

Eitherway I don't trust him..and interestinly we haven't yet seen why "no, you don't" want to talk to the captain - apart from the fact that he likes to personally beat up dissenters much like how Widmore personally beat up one of Ben's people who had the misfortune to get caught..

Well, Ben's a bit of a 'beating up folk who aren't going along with his way of seeing things' fellow too (Sawyer, Karl), so actually him, Widmore and Gault might make a cheerful trio. Personally I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if the captain knew all about Michael - though I agree that it could believably go either way - but that doesn't mean he's in on anything. It could just mean he has very close tabs on Ben.

The captain seems very shady, but then again he could be a red herring. I can't decide if he's Papa Widmore's man or Ben's man.

The Captain could just be very good at keeping a straight face when something shocking happens, but my initial thought was that he knew about Michael being the inside man...that if the scene had continued, he'd just smile at Sayid and say 'I know exactly what he's been doing.'

I wonder if Sayid's rash decision to reveal Michael as a traitor to Captain Gault is the mistake Ben referred to in "The Economist" where Sayid thinks with his heart instead of his gun. If so, I doubt that Captain Gault is a spy for Ben, because Sayid's "mistake" is used by Ben to guilt Sayid into working for Ben. The Captain may have a good poker face, but I think his eventual reaction will not be to Sayid's liking.

I agree with Murp and I've posted this somewhere before. I believe this is the beginning of a downward spiral for Sayid. The captain is not working for Ben. He is either working for Widmore or someone else entirely. A third party that we are not yet aware of.

Sayids actions are going to cause the people on the island to be attacked by the freighties. This will inevitably make him feel guilty which is why he goes to work for Ben. He is trying to ease his guilt by saving as many people as he still can.
