Goodwin's Burn

I'm not sure how much this is revelvant, if at all, I just thought I'd put it out here incase anyone wants to discuss it.
Goodwin said he works "over at the power station" which I'm assuming is the Tempest and also that he got the burn over there.
Juliet said Goodwin's injury was a chemical burn. So, if Goodwin did get it over at the Tempest, how did he get it and why did he lie about it the nature of the injury?

Maybe he was making the Gas that can kill people (as an order by Ben) and he just got injured. He was probably lying as it probably wouldnt go down well if he said "I did it while creating a chemical that turns into a gas that can kill everyone on the entire island" bit of a conversation killer!

Yeah, much like Roger discovered with Dharma, the Others (esp the veterans) 'real' work is kept under wraps or only given on a need to know basis. I think the basic premise of his lie relates to the idea that he's much more than a factory worker, and was actually in charge of the gas/chemicals that we later saw Faraday 'disable'.

I like that theory but I'm going to say something now which could ruin it if I'm right.
Ben apparently used the Tempest station to gas/kill all the Dharma memebers on the island, the exception being his own father whom he wanted to gas personally. If it was the same station (which I believe) then how could Goodwin have been creating the gas/chemicals just after Juliet arrived, which (if I remember correctly) was about 3 and a half years from the current Lost time.
Was he creating a new stronger type of gas or something like that?

It is possible that chemicals are used in the same facility either for creating electricity or for other purposes.

Jules knew that chemicals are being used, though perhaps they are being used for several things, one of which was a top secret project; i.e. poison gas.

Jules' tone 'suggested' that Goodwin should not have been near nor using the chemicals because he did not have the authority to. Unless of course she is unaware he DOES have authority and he lied to protect the project?

This particular chemical was probably for another purpose beside the poison gas. Unless of course they were developing more gas should they ever need it. Similiarly to Countries developing Nuclear Weapons that they never use.

Like a fail-safe in case of an attack or invasion you mean? Like Desmond's key for the hatch? It would explain why the gas was about to go BOOM on Daniel and Charlotte, and why they'd brought gas masks with them.
I wonder what other purpose the gas would serve?

Exactly. Which as it turns out may come in handy in light of the current Invasion from The Freighters.

Well the chemicals used to make the gas would have many purposes which was what I was getting at, whereas of course the gas itself has only one purpose.

Being that the Others surely did not set off the timer for the gas, I am starting to think Daniel and Charlotte set off the timer. They may have done this either to gain trust from the Survivors or because it needed to be activated in order to be permanently defused. Just examples of course.

Ohh hadn't thought of that. Good ideas! It'd make sense to have to activate it to shut it down, again it explains the suits and masks as a precaution, but it's be a good twist if they'd turned out to have done it just to gain our survivours trust.

Thank you. Though by 'diffusing' the gas surely it is still existant in the system, and presumably it can be 'reactivated'.

Regardind Daniel/Charlotte, it could explain why they snuck off without consulting the Survivors - because a witness would see them 'activate' the gas. Though Daniel seemed genuinly worried trying to deactivate the gas so perhaps it was not just to gain trust. A pointless act if no Survivors were to be present anyway, unless they knew they would be followed.
