Default Widmore Bought The Bloody Black Rock Journal!!

If ever we needed a(nother) clue as to whether Widmore is involved in this saga - here it is. The man just bought the bloody Black Rock Journal. I say 'just', but of course this was in 1996..

Anyway, this suggests that he has knowledge of the Island's long and illustrious history - of course we pretty much knew about his alliance with Dharma, but to see him buy the BR Journal implies that his knowledge of island history goes beyond Dharma...

I would really like to read that journal - I believe it belonged to the Captain of the BR - is that right? Anyone catch his name? (and any betting Alpert was a member of the BR?).

Also on a sidenot, anyone think it strange that he just gave Des Penny's address? Even if he knew Penny hated Des, surely he wouldn't want to take such a chance, since the pair of them were in love and she was only angry with him. Does this hint at past Widmore somehow knowing that he needed Des to contact Penny, in order to advance his rediscovery of the island (or something connected with facilitating the discovery of the island)? This would probably require Desmond to be Widmore's constant, as well as Faraday's, however.. it would also suggest that Widmore's future has changed slightly (as has Penny's, as we obviously saw).

It also seems more likely that the Freighties are indeed working for Widmore (or some alliance of)..although didn't Minkowski mention something about waiting for "her" orders? Who's "her"..Can't be Penny, since they were ignoring her calls?

Yeah the purchase of the Black Rock journal did pretty much solidify Widmore's dealings with Dharma or perhaps more strongly his connection with the Island. I think Widmore has deep investments (not necessarily money investments) in that Island and wants anything to do with it. At the time of 1996 Widmore could already know about the Island, hence buying the journal to further his knowledge, or perhaps the journal simply triggered his interest in the Island.

As far as him giving Des Penny's address, I think this could be either two cases. Firstly, and these are both pretty twisted options, he does dislike Des and he presumed that the pain Penny could cause Des by rejecting him would be monumental; the second option being that it could even be as a reward for not going through with the marriage. Pretty sick I know but this is Charles Widmore.

However I personally don't think that Widmore knows about the bubble curse. I don't think he's ever come into contact with someone who can have the concious space switches, and I don't think he knows anything about constants etc.

The captain of the Black Rock and the author of the journal did have a name, and I did catch it but unfortunately can't remember it. However it wasn't a name that has been mentioned before, I'm sure of that.

Yeah, I like the idea about his investments in the island not necessarily being monetary ones..that seems very possibly, although of course his money has enabled him (and Dharma) to indulge their quest for...whatever

Yeah certainly possible..it just seemed a risky thing to do, but yeah it's probably one of those two alternatives.

Yes, very good idea - he could well know or be in contact with someone who is able to flick between times etc - someone like Jacob, perhaps? (okay, probably not Jacob, but someone..)

Yeah, I also caught the name, but immediately forgot it. Will rewatch and find out.

But of course, as Penny said "you can find anything if you have the money"

To be honest Widmore seems to me to be one of those men that likes taking risks. Especially risks involving other people.

I wouldn't say that he's in particularly good contact with someone with the Bubble Curse, after all it seems that there is only a very limited time between getting the curse and your brain failing. Des's nose started bleeding the same day that he got the curse. So unless he's in contact with someone who has their own Constant (Daniel?) then it's more likely that he has just come into contact with someone a long time ago before they died and has been interested in the thing ever since.

Yeah I'll have to too

The legend of the BR is well known within some circles. The jewl of the sea and possibly, the key to the island's illustrious civilisation.

Looks in pretty good nick tbh.

Yeah knew he was in on it.
So if this was 1996, wonder what hes been upto since.
Was most likely his expedition that found 815 on sea bed that was also looking for the black rock.

I bet Penny and her dad are actually against each other in the hunt for the island.

The journal wud of course have the ships course written down, prob including co-ordinates and directions. Which i reckon is what hes after.

The auctioneer said that the contents of the journal are unknown outside of the family of the seller, Tovard Hanso. Given that we know that Hanso Foundation funded the Dharma Initiative, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that it contains some way of finding the Island.

Incidentally, it was under "lock 2342".

I think I agree.

*Cough*Central governor theory *cough*

For me, this is vindication of what I have been saying all along about certain people in the islanders past lives being interconnceted in more ways than just the people on the island and that there is some conspiracy for them to be where they are at that moment in time. It seems that Widmore, his hevily implicated in this, although may not be the big boss has it were.

Indeed, a strong possibility

Indeed, I think quite a few of us have speculated the same thing - especially concerning the likes of Widmore and Paik and the conspiracy angle etc

I agree, I don't think that Widmore is the central figure - he seems to be a pawn, a subject with some strings to pull.

I just hope they don't do an 'elders' storyline like Heroes! ('Heroes' spoiler within spoiler text - I know some haven't seen S2 yet)

Interesting to note that the journal is in fairly good nick - better nick than Faraday's one might add
