It's really only just occurred to me now, but Locke actually does have anger issues. He couldn't even walk 10 steps without cracking up after Ben tried to get under his skin (despite both of them even acknowledging that that was what he was doing).
Also, for a long time, people have said the opening of eyes signifies some sort of rebirth. Based on the fact that this episode opened on his eye, and then he immediately relapsed back into frustrated phone-sex-calling Locke, I think they might be on to something. ![]()

I remember saying when Locke went 'rockstar' in the Swan kitchen (throwing plates, cups etc) that I thought it would be revealed that he had anger issues. I certainly wouldn't be surprised considering his past and how withdrawn he was just before the flight (whispering "don't tell me what I can't do" to Randy).
I think he was quite confident before then; his relationship with Helen and confronting his father. His withdrawl could be just due to lossing his ability to walk, or perhaps the side effect of learning to control his anger issues after years of theropy? I think it's a huge possibility. ![]()

I think the accumulation of personal issues have made the John Locke we know today. Seemingly a nice gentle guy in his flashbacks to present day, he also harbours alot of anger which he hides beneath the surface. I really expected him to brush off Ben's comments in the basement, and I was suprised when he snapped.
Though I cannot fault him given what he has been through. I do not think he has an anger problem, quite the contrary actually. Locke is a very calm man by nature. Sun stated in S3 [?] she has never seen him lose his temper to which he replied he used to be angry but not anymore. Given his past and his present life on the ever puzzling Island where he is struggling to find his purpose I am not suprised he is showing intensity and aggression.

I think poor Locky boy has just been through a lot.
Cooper conning him for a kidney. Cooper pushing him through a window, shattering his back. Cooper on island, having him killed. Cooper faking his death. Helen leaving him. Plane crash. Ben playing mind games. Ben shooting him and leaving him for dead. The amount of people that have died. And many more if I had time. I think he can only take so much before he has a nervous breakdown tbh. I mean wouldn't you be a bit angry if all that had happened to you?? EDIT: Just read the thread, agree with what other people have said, a lot has happened, it's got to have had an effect on him.

I think that Locke's anger issues have been apparent since his S2 centric episode - the one when he's at the anger management meeting, where, ironically, he meets Helen, who ultimately adds to his anger issues.
Locke disappointed me somewhat when he lost the plot again - I mean honestly, why do that in front of Ben? If you're going to grill the man then grill him, but don't lose control 30 seconds later - you're not Sawyer, John..you're better than this! This scene would actually have been criminal from a writing standpoint (i.e. a cheap replay of a popular moment in Lost history) if it wasn't for the magical reaction of Ben. Last time round he took devilish glee from John's plate smashing..this time, he seemed almost disappointed, or saddened by Locke's decent - almost as if it was far too easy to get inside his head. As I mentioned last week - Ben seems to be holding all of the cards, don't mistake his current predicament for patience - he knows he's going to get out of that cell sooner or later, he even suggested as much to Miles. And as Miles himself said, "I'm exactly where I want to be" - who's to say this isn't the same for Ben? Going back to Locke, he shouldn't lose that anger entirely - everyone needs a smidgen of anger/passion/comittment/whatever to help to suceed. He just needs to channel it into the right areas. At the moment he's so vulnerable and open to coersion. Although perhaps this is a tad unfair on Locke, after all Ben has skills. Just look at how he mentally destroyed Jack, Sawyer and Karl in a matter of seconds!

He's changed alot through each series anger wise. He certainly can't control his anger and can't find another outlet for it.

You just enjoy seeing him unravel, don't you

Also he's a very frustrated person. He wants everything to go according to plan and needs somebody to tell him what to do so he can push himself but he doesnt like people telling him what to do so he's made himself a catch 22. He gets angry and frustrated because of this I guess and he really has a short fuse.
I agree. He can't create happiness because of what he's been through in life and especially whats happened to him on the island in just a few months, he's made a circle of things to fulfill and he gives up so easily and moves on to something else so quickly and he wont stop looking for something to fulfill because he'll never be happy with himself unless he has got something. |
