As pointed out, it might not even be live - just like Locke might not have really blown up the sub. If the grenade is not live then it reduces the torture element somewhat to 'mindgames'.

We must also remember that these 'freighties' are most dubious indeed. Locke will do anything to protect the island, and so i'm guess i'm with Locke. This isn't cotton-candyville, it's do or die time. Whilst I like Miles as a character, i'm suspicious of his motives and his fellows on the boat. He should have stayed put in the first place and I don't blame Locke for going industrial on him, lol.

I should add that I don't think this compares to the motiveless torture inflicted (literally) on Sawyer at the hands of Jarrah and Shepherd. Who says I don't ever have Sawyer's back

I blame her too...if she hadn't been so horribly selfish and wanted to know what exactly was known about her from Miles then there's a good possibility that Locke wouldn't have put his leadership foot down.

He'd already been wound by up Ben to, yet again, show that he's not as in control as much as he'd like, and then he finds out that someone who voluntarily chose to stay with him is going behind his back to make selfish deals with a person that he considers to be a great threat.

So I'm not surprised at all that he had had enough and was pushed into showing that he really has got authority over everyone there, but I was surprised at just what he did to prove it! Kate's lucky she didn't get a grenade in her mouth as well. And there's a good possibility that the grenade is fake, and that the only thing Locke put in Miles' mouth was fear, doubt and compliance.

Oh and if Kate was so desperate to learn just what was known about her, why didn't she have a word with Daniel or Frank when she was with them??

he doesnt have to put the pin back in. He just needs to throw it away. Grenades usually have at least five seconds till they explode. And they dont explode on impact.

Belive me, I tried this with a mobile phone on its side and its hard work after about 30 seconds. And I have strong jaw muscles - my dentist said so. So I cant imagine what it would be like for half a day.

And if its live or not isnt the point. the fact that it could be live is more than enough reason for it to be tourture.

Ill keep quiet now. I said I wouldnt get involved with these debates because with you and me Roco, I know how these go - in circles. And yes I would be the same with Jack, Sawyer whoever.

You probably couldn't hold a grenade - or any other object of your choice - for very long in your mouth if you had no real motivation to do so but, coupled with the huge amount of adrenaline Miles must have flowing through him and the very strong reason for clamping his jaw down, I'd bet that he could chomp down on it for quite a while indeed. As well as his survival instinct in general, he's also got the prospect of 3.2 million waiting for him if he can survive! So Locke could have done a lot worse to him, most certainly

I think if the grenade is live makes for a big difference. Not live, jaw don't go BOOM.

I think torture's a bit extreme - I'd settle for 'manipulation' or coercion
