Does Jack Care Less for Her Now?

Pre-Freightie Jack wouldn't dream of sending Kate into danger, even if it meant him become an obsessive like Paulo.

But in this episode he fully encouraged her to go with Sayid, not knowing what dangers were involved in such a retrieval mission.

Does this mean that he's beginning to care less for Kate? Or is this a sign or strength in that he now trusts her more and respects the fact that she's an independant woman ("throw your hands up at me")?

I'd say very much so. I think Jack has been totally consumed by the idea of getting off the Island and now that it looks like his return to real life is assured for him I think everything else has been pushed out of Jack's mind. I think Jack also resigned himself a long time ago to the idea that once they leave the Island he wouldn't see Kate again; due to Kate's constant running and because of his own ideals. So now that the chopper has arrived I think Jack has started to sever all connections with Kate. Jack is a cold hearted man and I don't think I can say Kate is a cold hearted woman in all honesty, and so I think this may have pretty severe repercussions on Kate.

Jack seemed quite upset that Kate did not return so I feel he still cares for her. And nor do I think Jack is cold hearted. He knew Sawyer was there to help her, while Jack also knew Locke or whomever was not going to harm Kate.

I don't believe that Jack now cares less for Kate at all. I think he's still very much in love with her. (Remember it was only in the S3 finale that he said he loved her...) I think it's more of a case that he's letting her go. I believe that the only reason he told her he loved her was because he knew that nothing was going to happen between them, he knew that Sawyer had got her, but he was comfortable in saying "i love you" because it was the truth. I think he is beginning to accept that Kate has chosen Sawyer. He only let her go with Sayid because he knew that Sawyer would protect her from harm.

I agree with this. If we are going to pick on Jack for letting Kate go with Sayid and Miles in this episode then I suppose we should also pick fault with Jack in regard to other occasions where Kate has been apart of Island missions.

What has happened with Jack & Jules anyway, are they no longer together? Point being, perhaps Jack still wants Kate or alteast his reaction to her staying at the Barracks would suggest. I think Jack knows Kate would not stay with Sawyer as far as 'couples' are concerned.

I think in a sense he was letting her know that he was over the strop he threw when he found out she was with Sawyer (not that he had any right to throw a strop as she'd promised him nothing and he certainly didn't own her, but that's Jack) - saying he'd accepted that Sawyer cared for her very deeply. It was a rather nasty bit of symbolism, mind, like he was giving her permission or worse still handing her over, but I guess it was kindly meant. And on learning she'd stayed behind, there seemed to be a certain degree of acceptance in him - he looked depressed, but he wasn't going to go after her again. So I'd say he still loves her and wishes her no harm, but isn't up for pursuing a relationship with her anymore.

Sure, i think Jack still wants Kate, but he knows that for the moment she has chosen Sawyer. With regards to him & Juliet...i dont think they were ever 'together' in the first place, i think all it was was a little something to pass the time while they were on the island. Jack was probably attracted to her in the beginning (because of her resemblance to Sarah), but it's Kate that he really wants.

Jack showed some initial disappointment seeing Sawyer/Kate in the cage but he was no stroppy.

Jack was just being kind to her by suggesting she go, though I am suprised she did not initally demand she go. Kate has never needed anyone's permission to do anything though she took up on Jack's 'idea' of going to the Barracks. I agree, the relationship boat sailed a long time ago.

I cannot see Kate & Sawyer or Kate & Jack ever making something long term. Jack & Kate have 'teased' the idea of being together, whereas Sawyer & Kate were 'kind of' together but under odd circumstances if that makes sense. There is probably more chance of Sawyer & Jack quite honestly.

We know Kate stayed at the Barracks but it was probably not in chase of a relationship with Sawyer. Jack & Jules genuinly seemed to have something or perhaps being everyone has been so busy of late we have not seen any interaction between them to suggest they are still together.

I think it was a bit more than passive disappointment, to be honest - he blamed all of his weird, complacent behaviour with the Others on the fact that Kate had slept with Sawyer, and it did seem to trigger his entire plan to do surgery on Ben and get off the island (though admittedly that plan did involve securing rescue for Kate and Sawyer, showing that even when he's disappointed and angry, their welfare is still a concern).

Yeah i completely agree, i dont think that he likes her any less.

I don't think Jack likes her any les but at the same time I think he's got more accustomed to the possibility of her being with Sawyer - he doesn't seem as bothered as he used to be, in my opinion.
