..or whatever Faraday said..
What could this allude to I wonder? Light, as I know it, only appears to scatter in the first place due to the density of our polluted air. In a pure environment such as the island, it would make sense for the light to appear different, since the air is more pure and clean. Perhaps this is even a nod to the location of the island..I mean how does light 'scatter' the higher up you are? Hmm, this will possibly spark 'the island is in space' enthusiasts no doubt.

Yeah that was an odd comment. I thought at the time it was cos there are a lot of trees in the way of his view LOL but there must be some geographical answer to this.

My theory is that the light rays interact with the discharged electro magnetic field, (i.e. the molecules interacting with the electromagnetic protons) causing it to alter path or appear to be distorted.

Would that mean the magnetic field was lower then space but higher then clouds as it seems to rain ok on the island - although that also stops in a peculiar manner.

could be the EMP comes and goes in waves scarttering clouds. Maybe Locke has come to read the EMP pulses and can judge when ther rain starts and stops. It certainly looks like he is feeling something when he stands there with eyes closed.

Was watching De Je Vu yesterday (good film) and they mentioned something about light and it's relation to 'time'.
Val Kilmers character said something along the lines of "us all being time travelers, because technically there's a short space, even a split second between how you look and the reflection you see in the mirror." (light takes time to reflect off the mirror and into your eye) Were the island to slow down light, it could mean time, indeed does, go slower. The 'light not scattering right' could ellude to the slowness of time on the Island... Maybe I actually like the idea.

well it goes back to what desmond said
"we're in a bloody snow globe" and plus the fact that no one can seem to find the island, maybe polution also cant get in sounds silly i know

It could be interpreted in a number of different ways, but I think the writers put that line in to suggest that there is something fundamentally *different* about the island.
Anyone else think that Faraday and Charlotte both seemed excited, somehow, about being there? A sort of 'wow, here we are at last' moment. Again, maybe a nod to the 'specialness' of the island. Last edited by PaulineMRoss; 02-11-2008 at 05:35 PM. Reason: Typo |

I think it goes back to what desmond said
about being in a snow globe if the outside world cant seem to get to the island and people cant seem to get off of the island, then maybe polution cant get in, making the light pure as possible x

Whilst I do like the idea of it simply being a nod to the island being 'different', possible time-travel connotations could well have been laced within his scripted comment. I mean, the light sure scattered (or perhaps the opposite?) when Des turned that key and time-travelled back into the arms of Penelope. As you also point out, it could even be a nod to time being slower on the island. However this challenges me, because I am of the opinion that time is actually 'faster' on the island..hence wounds healing quickly and the odd remark, such as Jack's: "it's seems like we were here 100 years ago"..

I thought it was something to do with Smokey, for some reason.

okay, so I don't think that it is a coincidence that a character called Faraday who happens to be a Physicist starts talking about the scattering of light.
We know that the island has weird magnetic fields surrounding it, and although the apparently large electromagnet under the ground has been blown up, there is no real suggestion that the island has lost its magnetic property. If the Electromagnet was blown up, the electromagnetic field is not something that 'hangs around' it only exists whilst there is something magnetic to make it exist. The only real explanation would be if the island was made up of a large quantity of iron based rocks (iron is a magnetic metal and can become magnetically charged). So lets say that the electromagnet blew up, but the huge field it created just before it blew up was enough to magnetise any iron based rocks in the area. This would explain the weird scattering of light that Dan observed. There is one other thing that noticeably affects the scattering of light and that is the Doppler effect. This is where an object is moving so fast away from or towards the spectator that the light is literally stretched out, or squashed together. This would fit in with some of the theories about the island traveling so fast somehow that it is actually affecting time. However, and I don't mean to ruin anyones theories, but the Doppler effect is a relative one, and so it would only affect the scattering of light if you were standing stationary and were looking back at the island. If you are standing on the island, you are moving at the same speed as it, and so light is not being stretched or squashed RELATIVE to you. I hope this makes sense. ![]() I definitely think the scattering of light is to do with the magnetic effect of the island and not the possible movement of the island through the space time continuum!! ![]() |
