Default The Noise Upon Seeing Christian Shepherd

I managed the watch this episode again recently, and I particularly wanted to watch Hurley's encounter with Jacob..

When Hurley spots 'Christian Shepherd' in Jacob's chair..just before infact, a strange bubbling noise can be heard. I've never heard such a noise in all of my Lost experience, and didn't notice it first time round.

I think this noice basically signifies (and backs up my previous theory) that Jacob was changing character - that is, he is able to 'morph' into the image of islanders..particularly dead islanders (imho). Infact, that is how I would describe the sound - a 'morphing' sound.

The fact that Jacob (or the image of Jacob that we were presented with in 3.20) suddenly appears right up against the window adds a slight complexity to this - how can jacob be in the chair one minute and at the window in a flash? Perhaps Jacob can teleport (within certain confines?), or perhaps there's somethig special about Jacob's chair? Sounds silly I know, but there's something about that chair.

Anyway, my main point is about the noice that is heard just before Hugo gets a good sight of Christian - anyone else hear it and have any ideas on what it could mean/signify?

i haven't heard it but this would explain a lot.
We always assumed it was the Black Smoke turning into these dead people, when infact, it could be Jacob.. like when it turned into Yemi or Boone

or like charlie appeared how he did in my sig

Yeah, it would be useful to unravel which of these entities is Jacob, which is Smokey, which is the Island and which are the actual spirits of the dead themselves. I do (still) believe that all three have been depicted on Lost - with the spirit's of the dead either appearing as the whispers or as the less 'threatening' island advisors (like young Ben's vision of his mother perhaps).

Your example of Charlie appearing to Hugo is an interesting one, because it would suggest that Charlie was infact the island manifesting to Hugo..OR that the the spirit of Charlie visited Hugo on behalf of the island, and thus validating the need to go back, just as he validated the need to not allow the frieghter people onto the island, moments before his death.

As I said, i've long believed that the manifestations are from various sources, but it's interesting to consider whether these sources will or have ever collaborated or batted for the same side, as Charlie's spirit may well be doing with the island (by asking Hugo to 'go back'), and as the spirit of Christian Shepherd may well have been doing with Jacob..

i think sound cues play important part of lost, there are some flashbacks that don't have the woosh cue, but what it means, I got nothing.

I agree, the pay alot of attention to detail. Slightly off topic, but I noticed interesting usage of sound when the island moved in the season finale - when they showed Locke and the Others there was a distinctive envloping sound..which also appeared when the camera shot to Faraday and the redshirts on the Zodiac. This 'enveloping sound' probably signifies that they went with the island. Whereas when the camera went to the chopper, a very different sound followed..I assume signifying what we all know - that unlike the people on the island Faraday, the chopper wasn't withing the sphere of influence and thus didn't move with the island.

So yeah, even in season 4 they appear to pay close attention to the sounds that they use.

welcome to the LC btw
