Ben - slip of the tongue?

Was this a slip of the tongue? Throughout season three we barely saw Ben being around Alex and when he was he didn't do much more than act like a distant father/authority figure but suddenly he gets extremly flustered and starts raving, not about his own safety or trying to convince Danielle that he could help her if she set him free... but to save Alex? Obviously he knows that Danielle wouldn't take kindly to such a sentance and it would have been just as easy to say her name rather than referring to her as his offspring so was it a slip of the tongue? Does this show how much he cares about her, or that Ben can still care for anyone but himself?

Or was it all a ploy? To try and rile Danielle up for some kind of reason that I'm not sure of yet.

I think it's quite likely a slip-up, he didn't exactly have a good idea of how to be a father from his own (although, who on the island has done?) and he rarely shows his own emotions as it is so I think it's likely that he didn't mean to say it.

i mean we dnt exactly know how long hes had her as a daughter kind of figure but its a long time
so i think maybe he was being truthful wen he sed that
you can normally tell wen hes lieing lately cus of the amount of sarcasym he uses

I think after 16 years of calling her his daughter and (apparently) caring for her as if she was - it's obvious that their relationship has now deterioated (the arrival of Karl?) but I'm assuming from the photos in his house that he really does care for her - so I think he feels that she is his, albeit adopted, daughter.

Then again, a part of me thinks it may be Ben playing mind games with Danielle, as Alex said in S3:

"You know he's manipulation you, right?"

"That's what my father does. He manipulates people. He makes you think it's your idea, but it's his"

But he wasn't very sarcastic when he was Henry... the exact opposite infact, he had the same over-enthusiastic desperation in his voice when he was denying to know the Others as when he was when talking about Alex.

yeh but that was the big mystery in season 2
like who the hell was he

from then on like it always kinda gave it away that he was lieing
by either showing him as sarcastic
or like later on in the episode he wud reveal himself as lieing
like he did to sawyer with the pace maker

but i see no real reason why he wud lie about wanting to get her away tbh

The only thing I can think at the moment is that he just managed to wind her up more. But how that is going to help matters is... well, I can't think of a way.

I really hope Ben is being honest for once. He's trying to do something good and gets smacked round the face by Danielle.

Maybe he's so used to lying he thinks he has to do it all the time.

Although Ben and Alex clearly have a terrible relationship at present, and though it's true that Ben has no good pattern of parenthood to follow, there's no particular reason why they shouldn't have been close in the past. Before he went insane and brainwashed her boyfriend. I guess that's fairly deeply engrained .. after all, Ben's behaviour, dire though it is, is allegedly inspired by a twisted concern for Alex's welfare.

He was a fool to refer to her as 'my daughter' in front of Rousseau though - for all his claims, he's a terrible manager of people.

I think he genuinely considers Alex his daughter. I've always had a suspicious feeling that the reason why he was planning to hand over Alex to the survivors, ignoring the fact that she was a traitor to the Others' cause, was that he thought the end was nigh for the Others.

Ben calling Alex 'my daughter' would make his concern seem more genuine (not that it isn't), and imply to Danielle that it's the course of action a parent should take. That short line could be a masterclass in manipulation.

Maybe. He's great at getting under people's skins, as we saw from when he was in the hatch, but for anything other than that, we can only assume he's better than decent, given the loyalty of the vast majority of the Others.
It would be quite amusing if he was noising people up in this way, all the time inadvertently.

the fact that he was nearly begging for dannielle to take alex away is showing that its not a lie

and yeh i agree with the whole him calling alex his daughter was to show that it was real
