I think I agree with this.
Regardless of whether it was too soon though, it fitted in with the episode's plot extremely well, as it was Charlie's last message that basically caused the split.

I agree with this too.
Also, Lost seems to put their characters in tiers, and Charlie was in the top one in Season One I believe. The hike to the cockpit serves to highlight that I think. He feels like the first main main character to die.
