I mean we as viewers didn't expect to see him again for a long while yet he pops up in the first episode. I think I agree with this.

Regardless of whether it was too soon though, it fitted in with the episode's plot extremely well, as it was Charlie's last message that basically caused the split.

I think that coz he was a main character who was there for 3 whole seasons, they can't just write him out completely...

Also, Lost seems to put their characters in tiers, and Charlie was in the top one in Season One I believe. The hike to the cockpit serves to highlight that I think. He feels like the first main main character to die.
