Default Why was going with Locke a bad idea??

We saw from the end of S3 that Jack and Kate shouldn't have left the island... but now we see that Hurley shouldn't have either, despite the fact all the signs from Ben and Charlie etc pointed to him going with Locke.

When Hurley was in the police station, he saw this:

WHY do they need him?? What is it that the remaining people are in such danger from?? If it's enough for Jack to fly continuously to try and get back, and Hurley acting like he was, even his "vision" of Charlie saying they need him... what the hell goes so badly wrong??

Could the people on the boat take some people home but also stay and maybe capture other people?? Could something happen BECAUSE they left, i.e. the Island needs them there, so they have to go back to save everyone?? Whatever it is, must be pretty important...

I forgot to say, it seems to be more than guilt of being home and leaving people behind, it seems like everyone who is left is in actual danger.

Good spot. God only knows what they left behind when they left. Could it be the Island playing tricks on Hurley and it wants them back. It makes you wonder that if people are in need of help that the Oceanic Six would not have left in the first place. Confusing stuff.

Yes you could see the guilt they had - you would've thought that they'd be happy to be back home - but no, there seems to be more to it than that. I reckon the Oceanic 6 are the ones they let off the island at the expense of the other islanders, like they made a deal, similar to the one Michael made with the others at the end of season 2? It's obvious not all the islanders have come off the island - there are people still there, perhaps in possible danger. Hence the guilt from Jack and Hurley. Just speculating.

It also seems to be more complicated than the straightforward knowledge that they've left people they care about in a dire situation. Jack seems genuinely settled and unconcerned at this point; Kate seems similarly sure of herself in Jack's flashforward. It seems to be something that takes some time to sink in.

Could this be the 'sickness' we've heard on more than one occasion; it seems to be spreading, contagious. Hugo has it during this episode - eventually, Jack gets 'infected'.
Maybe even, technically, Hugo recieved it from Lenny - the numbers eventually lead him to the Island.

Maybe what happens to people who have lived on the Island is similar to that of some newborn animals whom are rejected by their mother - they die. "Every living person on this island will die." Maybe Ben wasn't being direct; they won't be killed, but once they're saved they'll be driven to insanity and eventually kill themselves...

But why these 'six'? Were they chosen by Dharma - or whoever? Is this just another experiment; maybe the six chosen had the best survival chance for beating the sickness?

Re: Hugo going with Locke. I think that Locke's surprise look to the sky when it rained (there's already a thread on this, I think..) was a hint of things to come. Jack is perhaps wrong to run, arms open, towards these shady people. But something tells me running deeper into the belly of the Island is, er, wronger.

I'm looking forward to a possible flash forward when we might get to see Kate changing her views on the whole situation. I wonder what it is that makes each of the "Oceanic 6" suddenly realise the gravity of their decisions/actions. I do think however that when Jack and Kate had their conversation at the end of the Season 3 finale, there was something in Kate's voice which suggested that she too was already having doubts, that she too wanted to go back. But there was obviously something holding her back from confiding in Jack. Maybe she felt she had to keep Jack sane, maybe she was just trying to push her conscience to the back of her head or maybe this "he" she spoke of has some form of influence over her.

Nice idea. Sickness = "hullicinations/visions"? Shannon was sick, Eko too, and every other Survivor whom has experienced visions? The visions have ultimately changed the way the Survivors have gone about their business. Danielle killed her Team because their visions led them to act crazy? "Watch them, watch them closely" - Danielle.

Re: your 2nd paragraph it fits in with the slogans that the Island is a form of redemption for the Survivors - to "find themselves". By leaving, they in turn "lose themselves"? Interesting how Hurley caught it from Lenny during his stint in the Mental Institution.

I very much doubt the Oceanic 6 left on typical terms - something more has happened here. I wonder whether that guy who visited Hurley also visitied the other 5 Survivors? If not, then it would seem your theory on the Sickness is accurate. If he worked for Dharma [or whomever] why else would he be checking on Hurley?

I think Charlie was warning them not to go with the boat people not to not get off the island. But if Hurley makes it off he must have joined Jack at some point but if Hurley now says they have to go back then surely going with Jack was wrong??? I'm confused!

We will probably find out in 2009!

I think Hurley does not join Team Jack because in the FF Hurley tells Jack "I shouldn't have gone with Locke". Perhaps going with Locke caused something bad to happen, and after this happened Hurley joined Jack perhaps? OR, both Teams were able to receive rescue?

If there is a choice to go why would certain people stay on the island? I can understand why Locke and Rose/Bernard would stay.

But then again didn't Naomi say they found ALL the bodies underthe ocean so how can 6 people just turn up alive??? Maybe there were 6 bodies missing Jacks, Kates, Hurleys and three more and ONLY these 6 can be rescued in order to keep the story that 815 was found??

Maybe the Oceanic Six left knowing more would follow but the remaining Survivors were kept behind?

Well a cover-up could solve any "inconsistencies" through dead people turning up. Nice idea though why would 6 bodies be missing? I hate to keep bringing this kind of theory up as many seem to hate it and/or find it confusing but perhaps there were 2 planes? Arriving on the Island [somehow through loop holes or what have you] means we have two sets of Survivors due to alternate dimensions?

I do not know how else to explain the Survivors being found dead in the Ocean unless Naomi was lying but of course it is the same old question - why?
