This has been briefly discussed in the episode discussion thread, but I feel it is such a powerful story that I'd like to start disecting it in more detail in it's own thread.
The idea that the Losties should be divided has been foreshadowed for several seasons now - the individual rivalries have been ever present -"Lord of the Flies" was referenced, "The Pigs are Walking" was screamed. But now we have a clear dividing line..a line in the sand. As pointed out by someone in the discussion thread (can't remember who at this point), the majority of people on both Locke and Jack's side do actually want to leave the island..however this is complicated by Charlie's dying message - a message brilliantly conveyed by Hurley, who I have new admiration for. His message was an important reminder of the fact that they do have friends on this island..friends who would die so that they could survive.. Which begs the question, whilst Jack is so determined to kill someone and whilst Sawyer is hell bent on "surviving" - have they lost sight of what they really want? Are they so blinkered in achieving long sought aims that they forgot about the promises they once made? - "Live together, die alone" was what Jack advocated as he brought his people together from the brink of collapse.."I love you too" was what Sawyer promised Kate as they finally stopped running. I am not picking on these two characters, they are simply two examples for now. The sad thing is, I detected a moment of recognition from Jack - he knew what Hurley said was right..and get this, back in season 2 when they had been "warned" by the Others, Jack was more than prepared to change his stance..but a season later they get "warned" again, yet Jack is too proud to remove those blinkers. I'm not bashing Jack, it's a complicated situation and I can see why someone would want to hold onto a dream, afterall "haven't you ever followed a dream?" But I fear that if Jack doesn't wake up soon, this dream of leading his people..all of his people to safety, will turn into a nightmare. Well, unless the present can be undone, it would seem that it already is a nightmare. Incidently, which side would you have chosen - this has been asked already, but I think it would be good to use a poll. Feel free to vote and add any of your views or opinions.

Incidentally, I would have gone with Locke - there's just too much to support his stance - Jacob, Ben, Charlie..all point to the freighties not being the best option at this point.
I say 'at this point' because Hugo seems to regret his decision in his flash forward..which is most complicating!

i would have gone with Locke, but only because of the message Charlie left and i wouldn't want to, well, end up dead basically. but i understand why Jack and Desmond especially would carry on and go to the freighties, because they couldn't exactly just not go, as then the freighties would just come looking for them. and Desmond will want to know why they had a picture of him and Penny, and why they lied. I think Jack actually believes Charlie's message, but he just wants to know what's going on. And like Rose showed, a lot of the others think Locke's a nutter. Some people might not want to go with a man who just threw a knife at someone's back?
but not me. the baldness has a hold on me ![]()

When I was thinking about this, I was thinking about my fan fic. Whilst it is an extreme version of ones self, I still reckon that I would be close to Hurley, Charlie and Claire. Heck, I may well have been down there with Charlie watching him die. Although Desmond choose to go with Jack, Id be inclined to have gone with Locke. However, from the outside perspective, Id like to know why Hurley thinks that he was worng to go with Locke, and yet thinks they should go back? Id still side with Locke from an outside perspective, at the moment but I need further evidence. BTW, for the record I dont hate Jack for what he is trying to do, which is also understandable. Just the way that hes going about it. That, if I were on the island, would also make me think twice before siding with him.

I would have gone with Locke.
Even though the island is frought with dangers unbeknownst to man, it is still paradise and is away from the harsh realities of civilisation (money, war, famine etc). It is also a safe bet. Who knows who the rescuers are after being told that they are not who we thought they were.

Purely because of Charlie's message, I would've gone with Locke. Or rather, I would've gone where Locke's going - the fact that Locke's of the same mind as me is coincidental, and his presence has no role in my decision. It's all because of Charlie - he's the only one who's given a concrete reason to mistrust the freighter people, though I suppose the extent of Ben's panic about the freighter heightens that mistrust.
I blame Jack for lots of things and I don't have much more time for the man than I do for Locke, especially now he's joined the ranks of the trigger-happy (albeit with marginally more reasoning than most of the others), but I can see why he's sticking with his original plan. I think he's wrong to do so, but I can see why he's had enough of the life he has on the island and why he sees even death at the hands of the freighter people as preferable to more running/worrying/kidnap-evading etc. He might even be able to draw the attention of the freighter away from Locke's group - perhaps they don't know how many survivors are present. I'm interested, incidentally, that Ben's focus now seems to be on staying alive: he suggests that the threat is one of physical harm to everyone on the island and that they can, perhaps, evade it. The fact that the island's been discovered seems kind of secondary - I almost thought he'd be suicidal come this episode, as though there's no point to anything now the freighter's found them, but that doesn't seem to be the case. EDIT. And yes, that's purely on the strength of what we know at the moment - I'll be fascinated to see why Hurley came to the conclusion that he was wrong to side with Locke (possibly something that Locke specifically goes on to do?) while still being of the opinion that they ought to go back to the island. I definately would have gone with Locke, mainly because I trust him a lot more than Jack, and also because of Charlie's message and Hurley's heartfelt conviction that it should be followed.
According to the poll so far, Team Jack would be quite a lonely place... Team Jack ![]() Team Locke ![]()

Wow, 10 - 0 to Locke already
We clearly have a lot more sense that fictional characters ![]() I would've picked Locke because Jack doesn't seem the best person to put trust in at the moment. He just looks like he's too determined to get off the island and will even take huge, dangerousrisks if it means there's a chance of going home. Plus, Charlie and Hurley would've persuaded me a lot because Hurleys not one to speak up and he clearly had a lot of confidence in what he was saying. And even more, I'm easily persuaded me by inspirational speeches ![]() |

I would have gone with Locke because of Charlie's message & Ben's resistance. I'd rather be alive and on the island than dead & god knows where! Also, since season 3 Ive lost a bit of trust in Jack. Not only because of how he was friendly with the others, but also because his pride seems to be getting in the way of his common sense.

I'd follow Locke before Jack... plus, lets see who is on which team.
Team Locke: Locke Sawyer Ben Rousseau Alex Karl Hurley Claire Vincent Redshirts Team Jack: Jack Kate Juliet Desmond Sayid Jin Sun Bernard Rose More Redshirts. I may have missed a few, but the only ones that I would go with on Jacks team are Sayid, Desmond, and Jin. Conversly, on Lockes team, I like Locke, Ben, Sawyer, Claire, Hurley, Alex, and Karl. So, the one I want to follow is obvious.

Honestly, i really have no idea who i'd side with! It's a tough one...Jack's been the 'leader' since they crashed and even though he's had his wobbly moments, he's generally the type of guy you'd want to be stuck with, imo. Locke on the other hand is not the sort of guy i'd want to have as my leader, personally. Although i loved Charlie, which complicates the decision because i'd really want to listen to his message....hmm. I'd probably just end up conforming and siding with the majority lol....although are they about half & half? I dont know then! :S
