I do agree with the above comments about 'guilt' being important - I think this is partly the catalyst for the island manifestations and visions..Locke was guilty over Boone, Ben was guilty over his mom, Sawyer was guilty over Ducket ("it'll come back around" - whispers), Jack was guilty over Christian, Eko over Yemi etc..

I think another important aspect is that they weren't "supposed" to leave. I've been consdering this over the hiatus and I really do think it's important in terms of freewill and fate. They quite literally broke fate..whether course correcting will come in, i'm not sure? Although, perhaps that only deals with death.. perhaps this is what eventually changes Jack's mind in relation to going back? perhaps fate course corrects his decision to leave by killing the "Oceanic 6" one by one....

This in effect, could be the only way to get Jack back.... Oh fate, you are crafty. Mwuahaha

I'm saying he's seeing Charlie in the same way he saw Dave. And we know Dave isn't the black smoke because we saw Dave in Hurleys flashbacks. Therfore, I'm saying Charlie is a part of Hurleys imagination and he's seeing someone who isn't really there.

I think Charlie was just Hurley's subconscious telling him to go back to the island. Hurley is feeling guilty about whatever it is he did, and he knows he has to go back.
