A lot of people use dark/sarcastic humour in times of great pain and distress to try and lighten/block out the situation, and I can't really see Ben as the type to break down into uncontrollable tears even if the end of the world is just around the corner. He began to - regretfully - come to terms with the fact that what's done is done and tried to limit the damage as best he could, like trying to persuade Danielle to get Alex away. But he couldn't really do much at all tied on the end of a rope with Danielle and Jack taking it in turns to beat and accuse and drag him about, so he's probably just waiting for his chance to get free and act, and in the meantime he's coping with things the way he normally does: with as much calm and control as possible.

****

But anyway, I have to admit to not being blown away with this episode after watching it the first time - possibly because I'm used to a season opener being a lot more dramatic and twisted - but after watching it again it most definately is a good, strong episode, and the flashforward especially was great.

And apart from how truly awful Jack is, the island action was top stuff to watch! When watched again after seeing the rest of S4, I'm sure I'll appreciate this epsiode even more than I do now.

It's back, it's back, it's back How good does it feel knowing that we're currently watching a series of Lost! Now onto the episode:

It was good wasn't it It carried on from exactly where we left off in Through the Looking Glass; still had that feeling of rescue amongst everyone for some time. It was quite sad to watch the happiness of peopel like Rose, Claire and of course Hurley when you just know something's going to go wrong

The opening scene was always going to be a typical series opener! The moment I saw those mangos I knew something was up I don't know how I didn't realise it was Hurley because of the car he was driving I was so glad it wasn't a Jack flashback...forward (gonna have to get used to that!) for once because it looked like it was heading that way at first. Good flashforward anyway. Especially the scenes with Charlie and Jack involved. It made me jump so much when Charlie came smashing through

Jack shooting Locke. His violent behaviour is annoying me, I found it a stupid thing to do in front of all those people.

Wasn't overly keen on the Naomi chase scene. She should've died when Locke threw an knife in her back but oh well.

Nice to see the congregation at the cockpit! I honestly was thinking the other day that we haven't been back to the cockpit since the series opener - what a coincidence!

Sawyer, are we seeing him as James now? With Cooper killed, will he be nice and not want to be hated anymore? It looked a bit like that in this episode. Sorry if that's already obvious!

Nice to see Charlie of course. And I hope Rose and Bernard are staying in Lost permanently now, I don't like the way they keep dropping out

Lets roll on to the rest of the series now

And well done on the new look at the beginning of the episode discussion threads Kor It's a really nice idea having the picture, synopsis and other information there.

Well I was fooled by the pile of fruit not being on the island but I realised straight away that it was Hurley driving the car and it was also really obvious that it was Jack fixing himself a drink so I was a little let down by the beginning as I was hoping to be introduced to a new character again like we were in S2 and S3 so at that point my expectations dipped.

However I was impressed with a large amount of it mainly Hurely back in the mental home and the on island stuff with Jacobs hut was good but I really liked the bit where Hurley was at the police station and Charlie swam up to the glass also loved the bit when Charlie was seen by the other guy at the mental home

Loved the mysteries and new questions that have arisen from it and the sprinkling of humour here and there - for me it was quite reminiscent of S1

And although I hate to say it I found myself starting to like Ben

Still not a fan of the flashforwards though (but this one was more bearable than the Jack one)

How on earth did Naomi not only manage to get away and create a dummy trail ?

I liked this episode but I wasn't blown away by it. One thing I was impressed with was Emilie de Ravin's acting. She actually managed to pull off crying realistically

All in all a good episode but I think things will definitely get better/more interesting as the season moves along.

Wow....so Lost is back! After months of waiting we finally got to watch it...and it certainly came back with a bang! I always seem to find that i have so much to say about each episode, yet when i come on here to post my ideas i've forgotten them all!! Which has happened again this time...i feel i should start writing things down while i'm watching it!! Anyway, here's a few things...

- I loved how it had another flashforward - interesting stuff. I wonder whether every episode will contain a flashforward now instead of a flashback? Although if you look at it the other way, the 'flashforward' could actually be the present, and its showing a flashback to the island...hmm. Anyway i loved how they are referred to as 'the Oceanic six'! Pure genius. lol. So that means six get rescued...obviously Jack, Kate and Hurley....though who else?

It appears that Jack was right along the line somewhere, because Hurley said "I should have come with you". However i find it strange that it's not one of the 2 groups that get rescued, it's various members from each...very odd! I wonder how that works?..... My guess about the whole situation is that the 6 of them have an opportunity to get off the island and they do it, to save themselves, without a thought about the others. And they obviously pretend that they were the only survivors....but i think that one by one they will realise that what they did was wrong, that they can't lie any more, and that they need to go back for the rest of the losties. I guess Hurley is the first to crack, as Jack was ok then, but then as we saw in S3 Jack eventually cracks too. So the big question, what DID they do to save themselves? Very interesting. And who was in the coffin?

Would they be forever in hiding..or did some of them manage to leave. It's perhaps worth considering that this could be a good platform for the man in the coffin, because the Oceanic 6 are seemingly 'celebrities' - the man in the coffin seems not to have that status (- yet Jack clearly had a connection with him), which could suggest he was not an Oceanic 815 passenger
That's a really good point Roco, i'm glad you pointed that out. I assumed that the person in the coffin was one of the 6, but after you made that point i am more convinced that ever that the person in the coffin was Michael.

Moving on...to Charlie :'( how i missed him in this episode!! I knew i would, but it was so prominent, it felt like there was a big gaping hole somewhere. Gosh i miss him already! I wish he hadn't died! The bit where they had to tell Hurley was awful, and when Hurley told Claire was positively heartbreaking that was so emotional, and really well acted i think. And Hurley was so admirable for going against Jack just because of Charlie's message. (Ooh, a question. Who stayed with Jack & Kate? I couldnt quite work that out...) Anyway. Charlie appearing at Santa Rosa was obviously a representation of Hurley's subconscious. He is feeling guilty about whatever he did and he knows he has to go back. Oh, and the bit where Charlie swam in and 'broke the glass' at the police station scared the absolute crap out of me!!

The guy who visited Hurley in the mental hospital...i wonder who he really is? He clearly isnt a representative for Oceanic...its more likely that he is a member of Mittelos or something, trying to find out what happened on the island.

- About the whole 'Jacob' incident....i really didnt know what to make of it! Fantastic stuff, though. The bit with the moving hut was so freaky, it reminded me of a really old horror movie or something. So whats going on with that? How come Hurley saw it? Its like it was coming to find him. It wanted him to see it. If that makes sense. And what about CHRISTIAN?? When i watched it i didnt have a very clear picture (ahem) so i didnt even see anyone sitting in the chair, but my dad said he saw someone and then i saw the pictures of Christian!! I was amazed. So, is he Jacob? I have been saying that for ages now, but its probably a red herring...i just dont think the writers would reveal Jacob's identity yet. But if thats the case, what on earth was Christian doing in Jacob's hut?! The black smoke, maybe?

Ooh...i can't remember much else right now. I know i have more things to say though....i'll be back when i've remembered!

Solid opening episode. I had to watch this today as i missed the sunday showing. I dont generally do massive reviews like some of our posters, on account of my serial laziness, but ill say what i liked and didnt like.

I enjoyed the flashforward, i think Hurley (forget the actors name) has improved massively as a character, i felt sorry for the way he seems to be tormented by the 'island'/himself.

Naomi not being dead was a nice little shocker, if only momentarily. Its a pity she died, her real character seemed to come through in this episode, and it left me wanting more. Sister eh?

Locke was vague as usual, and im pleased the 'split' between locke and jack is now official. Who is right? Time will tell i guess.

Charlies cameo was good, i was pleased to see him get a send off. Pity they couldnt have done that with certain other characters. Who needs hurley? The oceanic six? The island? Dharma? questions

Ben was great by the way, emerson is still amazing

That's what I'm inclined to go with too ... but then again, would Walt not be there if it was Michael in the coffin?

Neither could I lol ... So confusing

I don't usually watch Lost twice in general ..... but I think part of the reason I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually do is because I downloaded it on my laptop instead and had a really poor picture. Buuuuut, I just flicked onto RTE there now and aparently Ican watch Lost there. I thought they woulda blanked it like they did Prison Break. Woop woop Lost is nothing without a (semi)big screen and some atmosphere So I'm totally gonna watch this episode again

Ah but you're assuming Walt stays with Michael. Walt may choose to stay on the Island or may even be dead/die.

What are you on?! She was awful. I thought Jorge sucked too. Des was awesome though.

What I liked about this episode was Charlie visiting Hurley in the mental institute and the ending. Other than that it was pretty average.
edit: I also thought Ben was pretty awesome in this episode. He actually made me laugh

That's the only thing. The man in the funeral parlour said no one had visited...and you would think Walt would visit if it was Michael. But in the newspaper it said the dead person had a teenage son - so regardless of who died, why didn't this teenage son visit?
Also, we have no idea what happened to Walt when they got back...there could be a number of reasons why he didnt visit Michael. Shame we dont know what they are...
But anyway, i'm still going with Michael. (Though my second choice would be Ben).

Also, i just want to add....although i missed Charlie terribly in this episode, i loved the fact that he 'came back' to see Hurley. I'm still really sad about his death, but in a way it gave me a sort of closure to see him there. He just looked so...i dont know, peaceful. Like he'd come to terms with his death and now he's peaceful about it. I just thought that was really nice.

I had the great opportunity of watching this as a premiere on ABC. I also had the opportuinity to watch the "special version" of 3x22/23 with the subtitled information.

I was very impressed with the episode but there was one or two things that bothered me.

I'll start with the positives. Its great to have a flash forward so quickly and we now know 6 people made it off the island (if thats what Oceanic 6 meant that is). My guess would be Jack, Kate, Hurley, Claire, Aaron, Sun, Jin with the added possibility that one or more of Des, Ben and Juliet made it off too but are not considered one of the passengers. But why all the top secret stuff about other people surviving? (I have always said I think Ben is in the coffin as noone knew him as he spent all his years on the island so nobody would go to his funeral but maybe Ben dies through spinal injuries caused by Jack's Operation which is why he was so desperate to do the womans in 3x22/23?)

What has Jack agreed to this time I wonder? That man is grating on me. I suspect thats part if the deal with the boat people to get rescued that they remain quiet about the island and any survivors. That creepy man that viisted Hugo seemed to think there are more survivors but why?? He says he works for Oceanic didn't he? So was Cindy/Pilot in on it all???

It was funny seeing Juliet doing all the hard labour of burying her other friends whilst Sawyer had a beer and Hurley did a cannonball.

It was great to see the losties divided as we need some tension amoung them to create new dramas. As I said on another thread I would have chosen Locke's team although that sounds like its the bad decision as Hugo regrets it later it seems.

I also loved how Ben played Jack in this episode. I'm not sure who I hate more now. Funny - I love Lost as a programme but I am becoming to hate several characters. Ben, Locke, Kate, Karl.....add Jack to that list now. I seem to only like those that stay in the background like Sayid, Des and Sawyer although I have newfound fondness for Hurley.

Now...WTF were the writers thinking with the Naomi plot???? As if a half dead person have the energy to fake a trail and climb a tree?? Its LUDICROUS. I have seen some fantasy stuff on Lost before but that took the biscuit. And to make matters worse its a plot point for Kate. Again showing as Kate knows it all and outsmarts Jack again with that annoying grin and fake cry. Again she shows she has not learned from her past by STEALING the radio. I so hope she goes pleading to Locke and Sawyer to join them and they say no.

I gave it a 7 as I'm intrigued to know where this is going but shame on them for that Naomi crap.

Edit - had to quickly mention Jacob's hut making an appearnce again. That was odd. I'm sure that is Locke's eye and the same eye that Locke saw in the cabin.

I also saw the screen grab of Christian in the chair and John Terry was credited but why not show him more clearly??

Also, if they have to change the credits to remove Dominic in episode 2 (unless Charlie is a regular ghost that only Hugo can see like that green alien that only Fred Flinstone could see) why did they have to out up the new names for episode 1? Talk about spoilers in the credits. I counted at least 4 new names.

Also was that cop in Ana Lucia's flashback episodes? He said he knew her.
