It;s been on the cards for a week or two now. First with Naomi telling Hugo and the boys that Oceanic was discovered with everyone who was onboard dead. And now we have Cooper literally believing that he was in hell..
Now the producers did i great job of distancing themselves from this theory earlier on in the Lost arc..but i wonder whether they long conned people in order to protect their blueprint for Lost.. Personally im think that whatever happens Lost will always have an element of purgatory interlaced in it. This is because technically and on some levels (self-discovery, remdeption, metaphorically) the losties are in purgatory. Now whether the producers want to extend this to a fully fledged purgatory is up to them..but the losties are already in limbo and they have already had to face their demons etc - purgatory has been touched upon on several levels no matter what they decide to do with the show. Anyway, what do you make of the purgatory revival?

I think they're in a metaphorical purgatory - certainly a lot of people are being forced to work through their demons one way or another - but not a real one. If they are in a real one, there'll be a lot of negative fallout because of the denials - and just substituting hell for purgatory may mean, like Ben, they've technically kept their word but, again like Ben, in a very tricksy and unsatisfying way.
What I find interesting is that Ben didn't want Cooper to reveal 'where we are', which implies that Cooper's theory had some kind of significance. I can't quite imagine what that is yet. |

No if they stated from the start it wasnt - why go back and rehash it it would cause an uproar and in my opinion i would lose respect for the show if it was that because it would have been far to easy to guess it and lost is more than that

surely this episode pointed to it being hell rather than purgatory? (with ben as the devil
)

I don't actually mind the idea of purgatory returning. Everybody seems to hate it and although it does seem like an easy way out of Lost for the producers, I think if they are very careful in making all future episodes based around purgatory, then they'd be able to pull it off.
I like what Murg said about it being a metaphorical purgatory. That means there can be a sort of sub-theme of purgatory, with a totally different explanation for the whole of Lost at the same time. |

I think it's a red herring to be honest. The producers know what all the theories are and as they did back in S2 when they toyed with the "it's all in Hurley's mind" theory.
