i did like this episode, can't deny it makes you think!
i'm sort of swaying toward the time travel interpretation - it seems that way - but maybe first we need to think harder about possible non sci-fi explanations... apologies if this has come up before - i haven't read all the forum posts about time travel etc yet could it all have been caused by dharma/hanso/whoever's in charge messing with his mind and some other manipulation? so...desmond dreamed the flashbacks. he was able to save charlie twice because he had been somehow primed into thinking that charlie would drown/lightning would strike (at some point dharma had taken desmond away and hypnotised him or something). he was missing for a little while after the hatch explosion wasn't he? maybe he was in the hands of dharma during this period? after all - who saw claire get into the water? could dharma have created some water currents or done something (drugged her?) to make her almost drown? what if dharma/whatever can make black smoke and other weirdness - had caused lightning to strike just by some technological means? ...so it all seems that desmond has clairvoyant abilities, but it's really because the events he forsees have been staged and he's been primed. after all, he only forsees some events so why the selectivity? he also has a feeling of deja vu for these things...but that feeling could also, in theory have been created by administering drugs/hypnosis. ...and all to what end? again...could be some weird psychological test of how people behave (eg charlie) if they believe they know what fate has in store for them? maybe this all seems far fetched (it's maybe not all a very well polished theory and not well thought out but i'm thinking on my feet here) but it is conceivably possible given some advanced science, technology and clever subterfuge...closer to being possible than is time travel! |

Yes, it's possible that it could all be smoke and mirrors on the part of Dharma (though i really so think theyre struggling down in their caves right now) or Mittelos (assuming theyre seperate from Dharma) or even the island itself. Manipulation is still a very present concern of mine and one which i cant completly rule out because eitherway..be it time travel or some freak dream..someone is being manipulated.
However, i do still genuily think he time travelled.. though even that is not to say that he hasnt been 'got to' by some group or force or what have you.. Afterall, "he's helping himself" and perhaps he doesnt even know it..least not in this realm..

But the failsafe was under the hatch, wasn't it? And there was the whole magnetic milarky behind that big old wall inside the hatch. The lid would have just been attracted to that, as was everything else metallic. I personally always thought the hatch exploded completely - the hatch door just flying off with the pressure then being brought back down by gravity. It would explain why everything was just scattered everywhere.
It would not, however, explain why Desmond ended up nekkid. Not that I'm complaining ![]()

You could also be right regarding the pressure - as Kelvin did say that there was a "dam" which was keeping the charge from bulding up too much. Although I do think that the hatch 'imploaded' rather than 'exploaded' - although as you said, it is odd how the stuff ended up everywhere. lol, yeah that is odd - especially now that we know that his consciousness (and not his physical body and clothes etc) time-travelled. There was really no reason to portray the man naked I'm sure they'll point to it being symbolic of 'rebirth', but this is an 'Eggtown deal' - They should have at least given us a naked Nikki at somepoint![]()

Just watched this for about the millionth time (thankyou skytwo and sky+
)I can't be bothered reading through 12 pages of all your wonderful ( ) posts but ah man what an episode, the way they changed the 'flashbacks' into one big long 'flashback' was just mind blowingly good (at least it wasnt a Jack or Kate centric ) I can't even think of anything to say about it yet, it still messes with my mind even after watching it so many times. (Is it abit obsessive knowing pretty much the whole episode word for word? ) |

![]() It's great rewatching old episodes. This one reminds me very much of The Constant - in that I love it but for some reason find it difficult to rewatch it too often - prolly because I don't want the awesomeness to wear off, especially seeing as these episodes deal with time-travel in a most extraodinary way. ![]()

I've just watched it again
I refuse to delete it off sky+ (like the s4 finale). One point that worrys me. Desmond says (about Penny): 'I love her, she loves me. I'm going to spend the rest of my life with her!' to which Ms. Hawking replies: 'No, Desmond. You're not'. But the s4 finale Desmond skips off with Penny so erm has the 'future' changed or is something going to happen to break apart the Pesmond relationship? ![]() |
