I know I've seen this somewhere before, can't remember whether it was on C4 or on here, but I'll repost it anyway.

When Ben said "I want that boat!!", it wasn't like he wanted it just so the Losties couldn't escape on it, he really seemed like he wanted it for himself. I mean the look on his face, you could just see he wanted it for a real purpose.

But, the question is, what?? Could it be a plan to get off the Island?? Surely not, what with all the stuff about saving it.

I really can't think why he would want the boat so much, when we're not even sure Walt and Michael got off (a clue that they did??)

It could be a for a lot of reason but I agree he did seem to want it more for himself

I guess we can assume he didn’t want it so the Losties couldn’t sail away as we know from Desmond coming back round that chances are they wouldn’t get very far

As for he didn’t want them to sail round and see the other island I would have thought if that was the case he would want to get hold of Desmond and find out what he knew from his little sailing excursion and to check that if he did see anything that he didn’t relay his information to the other Losties

I suppose there maybe a chance that there could be equipment onboard that Sayid would have been able to make use of to contact the outside world but then he would have taken it while he was on the boat wouldn’t he?

Maybe he didn’t want the Losties to be able to circulate the island in it because he wouldn’t be able to monitor where they are while they were on it and wouldn’t be able to know if they were coming to attack

Or he could have just wanted it to replace the one Michael had

What I don’t understand is how they didn’t know they boat was there in the first place I mean the assumption is that they were monitoring the Swan (via the Pearl and possibly even the Flame) when Kelvin brought Desmond back to the hatch so they would have known that Desmond was on the island and would then want to find out how he got there

This has been bugging me for a while too. Remember at the end of S2 when Ben said to Michael that he did not approve of the deal Ms Klugh had struck? Maybe the part of the deal he did not approve off was Michael getting the boat?

Very good point - it suggests that the Others were not in a habit of patroling the island before the crash of flight 815. And they were not all that curious - yes they must have seen Desmond arrive but when Kelvin found him they believed the story they two men told each other in the Swan rather than check for themselves.
