Default Locke's Legs

I've been rewatching Season 1.

Does anyone have any theories why Locke's legs began to lose sensation and started to fail him when he and Boone were trying to open the hatch.

Did his legs fail him because then Locke couldn't climb up the tree and board the plane so Boone had to do it instead? Thus Boone got killed instead of Locke or was it because Locke was getting frustrated at not being able to open the hatch?

The plane fell out of the tree with Boone in it just after Boone began talking to someone on the plane's radio. The island seemed to be preventing Boone from bringing any sort of rescue to the island.

I'm interested that the island cures people when it suits it to do so, and doesn't cure them either when it chooses.

Examples: Ben got a tumour on the spine, Lock's legs began to fail, Jack got appendicitis and yet on the other hand, Locke could walk again and Rose was cured of her cancer. Both Rose and Locke like the island and don't want to leave.
