Personally, I thought it was to make it more dramatic on the side of the writers. We, the viewers, knew that all the O6 must survive the helicopter crash and get rescued. What we didn't know, however, was if Frank and Desmond would survive. I think adding the drama of Desmond almost dying made it a more exciting scene.
As we've seen with near-death experiences with the O6 - a la Jack's appendix - it's not very exciting coz we know they're going to survive. I also thought it was more realistic, having at least one person having a bit of an injury from the crash.
In reference to why it was Jack, I agree with you on the idea of it adding to Jack's hero complex. It's like, even though they're free and about to be rescued, he still can't stop being the hero. It seems no matter where Jack goes he'll always be the hero.
