After watching the season 4 alternative ending video , I started to try and work out what the 'emergency ' ending would have meant plotwise.

Maybe Charles Widmore had found out about Desmond escaping the Island and being reuinted with Penny, commanding his people to find and capture Desmond. The whole thing may have panned out by Widmore allowing Des and Penny to be together but only under the condition Desmond worked for him ( like the Paik/Jin storyline) undercover among the Oceanic Six ( and Walt). This would explain the visits and the apparent contempt towards 'Bentham'.

Or maybe pushing the boat out slightly more Desmond would be pressurized into becoming Widmore's hitman. Which could have culminated in a face off with Sayid ( all the more interesting after their freindship in season 4). I know it doesn't sound like Desmond but seeing as he'd do anything to be with Penny and may have been alerted by Widmore of Ben's deaththreat to Penny in ' The Shape Of Things to Come'.

Just an Idea , what i can't work out is what they would of done with Sawyer
