I'd agree with the idea that Locke was dethroned, as I've stated this in several threads.
I also like the returning reference you've made to young Locke's choice about choosing the knife rather than the book of laws, as the law book seems to be quite a similar notion when we consider the real Bentham. It's possible that John Locke, the character who has now just taken over the leadership of the Others, took on the name Jeremy Bentham upon his leaving the island via his domotion, possibly due to his decision to now choose the book of laws, or something akin to it on the island, and thereby taking on the name of Jeremy Bentham?
