The frustrating thing for me (and I guess Locke), is that Jack knows it..deep down he knows he's been brought there for a reason and he knows what he saw.
Why is he so afraid to believe? Like seriously..is this all to do with Sarah and how she built his faith up only the hurt him? Or is it to do with his dad? If so then Christian (Mr. high and mighty) has alot to answer for aswell imo.

But as far as the question goes I can't see it going beyond Jack just not willing to admit he was wrong. He can't let himself believe in anything beyond science and so when confronted with such a thing as the Island going down the plug hole then he needs to deny himself.
I don't doubt the possibility of Jack thinking something else, I just feel that it's Jack basic stubborness (as Juls commented a while ago) that prevents him from admitting the truth.

Indeed.
The sad thing is, I think he's alot of faith..he just doesn't see it that way..he doesn't apply his stubborn belief in his own ability to get things done, laterally.
Sometimes I feel sorry for him, like when he repeated
"we're all still alive" (or whatever) after the chopper had crashed..it was like he was trying to reassure
himself by holding onto the crumbs of his own mess.
