Is that how you took it? I took that scene, and Jules' "He did it to prove he doesn't love someone else", as Jules telling Kate that Jack does love her (Kate) and not Jules. He (Jack) needed to prove that he didn't love someone else (Jules), and did love Kate.
I didn't see it as vindictive or cruel.
