I mean, it could be that moving Micheal out of the game was a mere tactical move of sorts for whoever was controlling the thing - we do now have a clear two sides thing going on here both on the island and off it. You move one piece (Micheal) to make room for others (Kate Jack and Sawyer) probably. Like in chess. Or Backgammon.

Yes, very good point - the 'game', which is certainly tactical, is going on both 'on' and 'off' the island - I think that's a very useful point to crystalise.
What also interests me is that the island must surely be able to 'see' into the future, if it can predict and plan all of it's movements, so many moves ahead of the game. It's as if the island is making
'real-time' counter moves with the benefit of
foresight..or perhaps
hindsight (depending upon how we perceive the mechanism of time). Also, if the island can see into the future, why does it need 'help'? Unless it's ability to dictate the chain of events must be persuasive rather than forceful?
I guess it was able to persuade Michael back with a bit of help from Tom..and I guess it eventually manages to persuade the likes of Hugo and Jack to want to come back, with a bit of help from a dead Charlie and a dead Christian Shepherd (i'm presuming Jack gets
haunted by his dead father, just as Hugo does with Charlie)?
Another idea aspect could well be that the island itself has opposition - "two sides" (as you reference above). Perhaps this opposition is in the form of the widmore's of this world - 'human threats' - or perhaps it's in the form of the Universe itself. Time seems to be a conflicted element on the island..
is the clock ticking down for the islands very survival?
