Oh no doubt about it. in fact she was more to blame, i'd say. She toyed and teased him and screwed with his poor fragile mind.

He's in a better place now.

I really hope for a Walt/Shannon explanation even if its a passing comment that was not really Walt or it was.

But I'm moving away from the point.

Yes Karl is as bad as Boone sleeping with his sister.
Indeed, redemption seems to be an all-encompassing theme in Lost. It seems that each character, no matter what their circumstance, needs to be redeemed. It's actually interesting to consider whether a 'reborn' person (as the Losties literally are after surviving certain death from the 'crash') needs to be redeemed. Aren't they already a tabula rasa..a blank slate? I guess not considering their pasts cannot simply be washed away.

It's also interesting, i think, to consider whether the island decided to kill those who have redeemed themselves, before they have the opportunity to regress. Again, this is another way of the island governing peoples fates..almost as if it either has no faith in them, or that it is saving them from what it knows will be future mistakes? With this in mind, is the island granting them a form of afterlife..is it actually being 'merciful'?

As for the Walt/Shannon thing, i don't think it was random - 'Walt' has shown up in too many peoples visions and is held in too high a regard by Ben, Jacob and the island for his appearances to be a passing comment. That's my hope anyway. I think that in Walt the island has found a conduit..it has an impression (a shell) of this person whom everyone loved and whom everyone felt a close bond with. Previously such Walt-sightings probably was Walt himself astral projecting, however I feel that the island has now used his 'impression' to effect and move the characters in specific directions.
