It doesn't make sense because it's a load of twaddle. He's still the same angry, lonely man with no sense of direction. He wanted a sense of purpose off Island, thought he found it with Cooper and ended up being disappointed and angry. He thought he found it with Helen, and ended up being disappointed and angry (through his own fault). He thought he found it through the Island, he's ended up being disappointed and angry. He thought he found it with Ben and the Others, he's ended up being disappointed and angry. That's not a journey, it's a boring circle.
