Yes, that's very Ben, isn't it? It's somehow very important to him that he keeps the basic technical meaning of his word ('I'll get you home'), but the implication and spirit of his word don't actually matter to him in the least (ergo it's okay to manipulate Locke into blowing up the sub). It's a bit androidish really - so long as he can say he's *literally* done what he promised, he doesn't care about the practical reality of what he is at all. I'm not actually suggesting Ben's an android though. That's a plot twist too far.
