So did I, I'm afraid. Ki's right to point out that, on that island, you've basically got a pretty sorry bunch to choose from, and it's a fairly shady decision when you consider that Jack himself nearly murdered Locke in the very scene Rose chose to side with him, but I do applaud Bernard's general sentiment. I don't personally believe life's as course-correctingly fair as he clearly does, but it's nice to think that, regardless of their 'rescuer's' true motives, straightforwardly refusing to side with people who've committed acts you abhor ought to count for something. Locke (and Ben) may feel he has a great cause at stake and his way may even be better for the Losties in the long run than Jack's, but those facts alone can't be allowed to justify unnecessary ill behaviour, and I have to respect those who acknowledge that truth even at the potential expense of their own safety.

As to why Jack over Locke, I suppose it's because Jack, for all his failings, has spent far more time actively seeking to help people like Rose to escape than Locke, who's actually put a great deal of effort into keeping people stranded purely for his own selfish ends. And unfair though this may be, both Rose and Bernard could probably sympathise with and more readily forgive Jack's passion-filled attack on Locke than they could Locke's distressingly collected and (to them at least) unfathomable attack on Naomi.
