Although I do I know what you mean if you're referring to to moment after they've switched - although my point is that we don't know what this is like, we don't know what such an experience is like. If he 'can't get back', what exactly is happening to him - does his door to the present gradually fade out? Does a metaphorical window simply shut? It would be interesting to see what he saw as he was struggling to get back.

In saying that, at one point Desmond consciously tried to switch himself back by flashing the light in front of his eyes (
nice touch TPTB) and he even said -
"I've got to get back". With this in mind, perhaps this shed's some light on what Minkowski was experiencing - it seems likely that his past-self was literally willing himself to go back, and he even momentarily gained consciousness with his future-self, alas the window had closed.
