Yeah the purchase of the Black Rock journal did pretty much solidify Widmore's dealings with Dharma or perhaps more strongly his connection with the Island. I think Widmore has deep investments (not necessarily money investments) in that Island and wants anything to do with it. At the time of 1996 Widmore could already know about the Island, hence buying the journal to further his knowledge, or perhaps the journal simply triggered his interest in the Island.

As far as him giving Des Penny's address, I think this could be either two cases. Firstly, and these are both pretty twisted options, he does dislike Des and he presumed that the pain Penny could cause Des by rejecting him would be monumental; the second option being that it could even be as a reward for not going through with the marriage. Pretty sick I know but this is Charles Widmore.

However I personally don't think that Widmore knows about the bubble curse. I don't think he's ever come into contact with someone who can have the concious space switches, and I don't think he knows anything about constants etc.

The captain of the Black Rock and the author of the journal did have a name, and I did catch it but unfortunately can't remember it. However it wasn't a name that has been mentioned before, I'm sure of that.
