That's just Sawyer's way. He clearly just doesn't know how to comfort people but the feeling was there
Hurley was definitely affected most. I think Desmond was too .... except his reaction was mainly captured at the end of Season 3. Especially when Charlie gave him his list to give to Claire and when he saw Charlie through that window during his final moments
