CHAPTER 7: THE ALLIANCE FOR KATE'S FATE

Juliet left Ben to do the explaining, she had more pressing matters to see to. Plus she really did not want to be there when Ben reveal her to be a traitor to the people she'd been living with for the past 3 years. Though now that she thought about it, what could he have expected? Everything she'd gone through on this island had been due to Ben's orders, she'd been a virtual prisoner for the past 3 years, alomst as much as Jack when he'd been kept in the shark tank at the Hydra station. If Locke hadn't blown up the submarine she'd be home now, and Jack with her. Instead Jack was dead and she was left behind trying to save Kate's life while surrounded my people who she knew didn't trust her. If she messed up on the operation on Kate she'd be signing her own death warrant. She was no surgeon, wasn't Jack. She didn't have what it took for this job. Fighting back the emotions and memories threatening to overwhelm her she focused on following Alex to the operating theatre, hoping it wasn't too late.
"Jack." Kate's voice was hoarse.
"She's talking?" Said Alex from ahead of her. "That's good right?"
"It's good that she's regained conciousness, it means she's still fighting the infection. The fact that she's calling out for a man she saw die is slightly worrying." Said Juliet. She was getting even less confident now she could see how weak Kate was when she was conciousness.
"The doctor's dead?" Richard's voice cried out from behind her. "How did that happen?"
"I will explain everything but right now we need to help Juliet save that women's life." Ben replied.
Juliet's heart sank lower. They were coming with her. She always got nervous when Ben watched her operate, was always reminded of the deaths of the women who had gotten pregnant, confident in the belief that she, Juliet, would find a way to keep them and their unborn children alive, only for them to die with the realisation of their mistake being the last thought in their agonised minds.
Mentally shuddering Juliet changed into her medical uniform, cleaned herself up and tried to focus on the task at hand. She reached the doors of the operating theatre when she heard a voice behind her. "Hello Juliet." She turned around to find herself face-to-face with Isabelle, Ben's second-in-command, the woman who had ordered her to be marked for Danny's death. One of the last people she wanted to see.
"Isabelle." She nodded to the other woman. "Can this wait? I have to see to Kate."
"I know. I'm here to help, and to inform you that for now, a temporary alliance has been formed until this operation is over. Afterwards our people and your new friends." Isabelle stressed the word to show just what she thought of Juliets alligences. "Will talk and discuss just what has happened over the past few days that has led to you all being here."
"You're making an alliance with them? Why do I get the idea you'll be getting something out of this." Said Juliet, her face betraying her thoughts towards the other woman.
"Actually we're not. You see, some of us don't use people's lives as leverage to get what we want." Isabelle smirked.
"You think I'm using her as leverage?" Asked Juliet incredulously.
"No, but the timing is remarkable. If you save her they'll welcome you with open arms, and while she's in theatre we can hardly question you about the past week's events." Isabelle's face hardened. "Like what happened to Tom and the others, or why Ben looks as though he's been used as a punching bag."
"As much I'd love to stay and plead my case to you, only for you to mark me again, or have me executed, like I know you want to, there is a woman in there who is getting closer to death with every minute left untreated. I may not have been her friend, in fact at one point she dislocated my shoulder, but I'm going to and help her because enough people have died recently." Said Juliet, before turning on her heel and storming away from Isabelle. Just as she reached the doors she heard Isabelle's curt response. "And how many of those are on your shoulders?"
Juliet hunched her shoulders and entered the operating theatre, away from the damned hypocrite known as Isabelle. Sun was there, dressed similarly to herself, as were Amelia and Richard. This was her team, and Kate's life rested on their shoulders. Above them in the viewing station Ben and Sayid were joined by Isabelle.
Her throat dry, Juliet swallowed , fighting down her fear, hoping this operation would turn out better than most of those that had taken place in this room. She pulled on her surgical gloves and took up the scapel. Looking round at the 3 faces watching her anxiously she wiped her brow on her sleeve and looked straight back at them. "Let's get to it."
