I think Kelvin was lying (or not telling the whole truth) and that he is/was an Other like Mikhail..
I've heard that many many times but this is the first time I thought of this:

Was Kelvin fixing the boat for Ben? And not to 'save himself'?

But then if that's the case it would suggest that Kelvin had gone 'dark' (i.e. no communication) with the Others which doesn't make a lot of sense...

Plus, if Kelvin was an Other why was he pushing the button that Ben so obviously thought was a joke?
